Evening All,

Still peeved that our 6 week holiday to Cape York was suddenly halted at day 5 with the Cruiser breaking down at Birdsville,to only have another kick in the guts today. We pulled the auto out this morning only to find from the counterweight back thru the auto is all fine. She has a broken crankshaft near the rear somewhere. Not good from a 61K engine. We will now pul the motor out and check the bottom end to assess the damage, hopefully only the crank is broken and hasnt damaged the block.if the block is damaged it looks like a new short motor for her.So thats the story so far, when it is pulled down i will update you all further.cheers and me drinking lots of beers Paul

Paul

Sorry to hear of this turn of events. Must be one in a million with a Toyota engine. Even though the vehicle is 5 years of age I would still approach Toyota Motor Company to see if they would offer some goodwill recompense.

Cheers

Willem,

Yeh, not happy to say the least, as for toyota i doubt they will do any thing as i have serviced it every 5K myself since new.the crank breaking is one in a million, they do spin bearings but broken crank i believe is unheard of in the 1HD-FTE.oh well thats life cheers Paul

Td100 I use to own a 4runner that got a recall notice from Toyota whenb it was 13 years old. It was a part of the steering linkage if I recall correctly. It was replaced at no cost to me. I found this unbelievable, so you never know, they may come good as they jealously guard their rep.
Good luck anyway Pete

Yep good luck as well , I would find it hard to believe they wouldn't do anything espically if an examination showed it was a fatigue crack type issue , which would seem to be the only possibility unless it shows evidence of heat stress from lack of oil

One in a million??? Maybe for a 100 series but not for toyota. Common problem with the 3F, in fact there was a recall in the early '80's.

Safety related recalls happen regardless of how old the vehicle is & that is why the 4 runner steering drag link was replaced under warranty

Anything that isn't safety related isn't covered by the same rules

Just a note mate...if you do the rebuild then check the Harmonic balance is all ok. Not sure if its rubber or fluid but they both can fail and can cause broken crank.

Sorry about your loss....

All the best

Matt.

G'Day Paul,

Lucky you had the travel insurance. Have you had some prices for the rebuild / long motor ? Did you consider putting a V8 Diesel in instead of original equip ?
I am interested how it goes (I have a 100 T/D) so please keep us informed how you go.
Regards
Col
