Reverse Light

I have finally got sick of the dicky little one-side-only excuse for a reverse light that the GU offers and want a light that actually shows me what's back there in the dark.

I searched the forum and found reverse light circuits and mounting system etc but couldn't find out what type of light people are actually using.

I have heard of people using 12v downlights that we have in our homes that normally run off 240/12 transformers, or driving lights.

If possible I would like it to double as a work light with a switch only in the rear of the car so i am not tempted to blind tailgaters LOL

Go to ebay and type in " work light" and you'll see a few options.

I bought a couple for my rig @ about $20- each.

You can also get them from Autobarn, Repco Autopro etc

Wire-up using a relay with decent size wire from battery.

On the relay "switch" tab, you need to run that wire to a 3 way switch (or maybe just an ON/ON type with no centre off). That wire goes to the centre post of the switch, whilst the other 2 posts of the switch go to: the reverse light cable of the Patrol and : positive power in. I would actually run a dual core cable from the relay to the switch...... one wire of the cable (which doesn't have to be heavy gauge; speaker cable would do), to take the power-in to the side of the switch to allow you you turn the light on independantly of the reverse circuit.

Sounds complicated the way I've described it, but it's chit-easy in practice.

Cheers

Yep, that's them mounted between the spares. I also have 2 others which face out to the sides of the rig....good for having a look at something like a turn-off or even a number on a letter box etc.

I know you said the switch for the rear lights wouldn't be in the driving area in case you were tempted to use it to "remind" people who forget to dip.....BUT, I have my switch in the cab and quite often use it to switch the lights on after I've gone through a farm gate and need to light-up the area for the person who has to close it.

I reckon you should have a switch in the cab area, as well as one in the rear if you want to.

I have just wired up the tail lights, reverse light and indicators in the GU and it looks much better in the dark now.

And you can see in reverse, which is kind of a novel concept.

Maybe that's a better alternative.

All it cost me was some Narva lamp holders, globes, a metre and a bit of 5 core trailer flex I had lying around and an hour or so in the shed with a beer and the footy on.

hi Dave ,
do you have the clear reverse lenses on both sides of your tail light assembly?
Mine is the series 1 which only have the clear lens on one side

Hi Wayne,

Yeah. I didn't think of that. Mines a Series 3 with the clear lense on the other side & indicators.

To get around the indicator thing I got those orange tinted globes. They have offset locating pins and I had to nip one off to get them to suit the standard Narva indicator bulb holder.

Unless you want to change the housings over you might not have another option other than the worklight. (The new ones do look good though...)

My fault Dave I should have mentioned it.

I tried a few years back to buy the arab spec lights but the sale fell thru and i didn't bother again.

Now, the reverse light, or rather the lack of it, is starting to annoy me again and i thought while i was on vacation i may as well do something about it.

Wayne,

FWIW, the (so-called) "Arab spec" or "Jap spec" (I call 'em "correct spec";-)) lights are available on ebay for as little as $168 the pair (buy now, + postage) for the series 1..
Series 3's can be had for $ 194 a pair (+ post)..

I have s series1 (4.2) and a recently acquired series3 (4.8 auto) Patrol, and have fitted the after-market lights to both of 'em (the way they should'a been from new).. As far as the reversing lights go, the series3's are the pick of 'em (not too bad at all, really), and they'll fit the earlier model if you wish to "upgrade" .....

Thanks Ed,
They are a bit cheaper than i was going to pay a couple of years ago.
I agree with your thoughts on them being the way they should have been from the start.
Can't see how saving a bit of wiring and lamp holders and still having to make the lenses was a good economic idea but i guess the bean counters could.
