Hi all,
I have a 1996 1HZ Landcruiser. I am wanting to get more power from it mainly for towing a horse float and have a few ideas.
1. Turbo charge it but I am unsure of the effects on the engine as it has about 335000 k on it already, I would like to know how much it would be and whether it is a good or bad idea based on the engine k's?
2. Put Gas on it. I would like to know how much again and what sort of power increase I would get.
3. Ditch the 1HZ and fit a V8 maybe 350 Chev or holden V8 I would like to know how much once again.
Your opinion on the different mods is appreciated and very helpful.
Thanks in advance
Richard

Hi Richard,
My old girl (4.2TD) has more than enough grunt to pull a float with two horses, admittedly they are not the biggest horses, Ponies, not little ones. Does us just fine. Gets about 8k/l when towing at about 90kph. It's not a race.
I'd go for a turbo.
That's just my opinion :-)

i was told it was a waist of time putting gas on those engines without turbo don't really gain the full benefit from the gas got rough quote about 3000 to 3500 for turbo and another 3500 for the gas but u can get government rebate of that if it is registered in a personal name so brings the gas back to 2000. had a 350 chev in my old fj 40 shorty very thirsty it was but fuel was much cheaper back then and that was a carby engine the new ones might be much more efficient.

get a good factory turbo 6 exchange. they go good and easier to fit than a chev.

I think the first option would be your cheapest. There are heaps of 1hz's with after market turbo and dont seem to give any issues. Ring Turboglide in Woolongong. They have been fitting them for years and will guide you in the right direction. I dont think klms will be an issue, but your cooling system could be if not 100%. Also the viscous fan is a very common problem but can easily be fixed.
They have a web site as
well www.turboglide.com.au
They are quoting $3390 for your model including exhaust. Regards Steve M

they might quote just under $3400, but then i'm guessing you'll need the injectors done with those klms on the clock, my 1 HZ was around $700 for the injectors when i got a turbo added.
my DTS was $3400 roughly without exhaust, so that's pretty cheap.

Hi Richard,
I recently had a Denco turbo fitted to my HZJ80 which had 320000 on the clock. Cost around $3300 including a new exhaust. The difference is amazing, A
hill between
Mudgee and our farm used to see me top in 3rd gear at 80k...now I can crest at 110 in 5th. Consumption has fallen from 15l/100k to 13l/100k and the previous black smoke has disappeared. Pulls a car trailer loaded with 2 tonne crusher dust up and over the
hill like it wasnt there. All on 285/75 tyres. Go the turbo, you may like to have your injectors serviced as
well to be on the safe side. If your cruiser has a good service record then the engine has a long way to go before it should cause any problems
regards
Guy
