G'day all
I have a 99 L/Cruiser 100 series with a dud gearbox at a Toyota service dept. Apparently repairs not possible due to damage.
Options;
1. New box from Japan 4-6 weeks (none available in Aust. ) around $5500 + Torque conv. + fitting
2. Second hand unit from
Melbourne 1 week. $ 3000 + torque, freight and fitting.
Question. is the price and time saving (staying inc/v
park 1000 km from home ) buying the s/hand one worth the risk.
Any comments and suggestions greatly appreciated
Thanks,
John

G'Day It would pay you to
shop around yoursellf if you have the option I am employed in a service station and we fit many second hand units from transmissions to engines and lots more. We always give the customer the choice of new or second hand.
It is hard to go past the savings on second hand gear and while the warranty may not be as good as new stuff most
places give 3 months unlimited km's. Generally the second hand gear works or doesn't work and everyone we deal with are happy to sort out any dramas. On saying that i reckon in the last 3 three years and probably close to 50+ 2nd hand units fitted 2 have had prob's and been fixed promptly at the suppliers expense.Generally the warranty on new gear is only 12 months parts warranty anyway.
Why did the auto fail. The biggest killer of auto's is heat.
No matter which way you go (new or 2nd hand )i always strongly recommend the biggest oil cooler you can fit/afford to be fitted at the same time and if 2nd hand make sure it is serviced.
Some wont agree but i always bypass the radiator oil cooler when installing an oil cooler as it will also give some relief to the engine cooling as
well.

Hi John,
I have never bought anything from this company but they have given me good advice by email when I couldn't solve automatic transmission problems and it appears that they do a good job on their reconditioned and "Extreme" transmission range.

It might be worth checking their website and giving them a call.

You might be lucky enough for Col from On Patrol to see this and he might be able to help you out. He just purchased a second hand motor and box and is located in NSW like yourself. He might be able to give you a phone number or some thing. Why has the box let go ??? Not the norm for these boxes. If its due to towing the van you have I would be finding out the reason and if needed as suggested above an additional transmission oil cooler may be needed. Regards Steve M
