Hi, has anyone used one of these phones while in the outback. Looking at buying one as telstra say ?? they are good for rural reception as it has more ??? cant remember what that was.
I want a phone for travelling and need a bit better reception than my nokia gives me. Any help would be appreciated.

Yep.
I have used it successfully in numerous remote rural locations - that is not to say that there is great coverage everywhere... much of our great and wide continent remains mobile coverage free, thank god.

Clearly this is only on NextG and this is a Telstra only service.

They are quite good for rural use (Telstra) , but you need the external antenna for maximum range.

Without an external antenna they are not quite as good as the Nokia 6120.

They are probably the best value for money rural phone around pre-paid.

Hi Geriatric Gypsies, where did you get your external aerial from and how much did it cost?

Cheers

goodday mate
i bought the aerial and 412 adapter at the telstra shop $129 for aerial $20 for adapter and 25bucks for aerial mount at dick smith
at the minute my aerial is mounted up high on the pack rack as a temporary place but i am trying to find a best position down at the kids farm
we unplug the aerial on a regular basis to check reception and prove how well it works

Not sure if it meets your need, but the A411 is an identical phone on pre-paid, rather than a plan. Better colours, esp for the keypad, which is easier to read.
It is, of course, locked to Telstra network.

Gee that is cheap. In that case it would not pay to take out the $20 plan a month for two years.

Included with a $10.00 plan.

Most calls will be coming in. Also will use SMS more than voice, so $10.00 should go a fair way. I can top it up as I need it. Seemed to be the cheapest option for me to obtain Next G coverage.

Have my GSM for phone calls in city areas which is half the call price.

I got the A412 about 2 weeks ago. I'm in a 'regional' area where there is a lot of black holes- even with NextG. The Samsung seems to be getting a fair to good signal at most locations- compared to (I think) swmbos Nokia...
