GQ glow plugs

My 2.8td GQ is having problems with the glow plugs at the moment (240,000km). About half the time when I turn the ignition on there is no light on the dash and the glow plugs are not working. I can turn the ignition on 10 times with no change and yet I can go out the next day and not a problem!
Any experiences with this? Not sure if I should
a) pay for an auto electrician, or
b) replace my glow plugs which will cost me approx $400 just in parts.

I'm sure I'm not the only GQ owner where this has happened?

Cheers,

Gossy, do you have a workshop manual for your GQ? I'd be looking at the electrics before shelling out for new bits. Similar thing happened in my old Rodeo some years ago. we took it to the diesel guru's around the corner and they sussed it out in minutes. In this case it was just a faulty relay. Cost about $30 to fix.

thats good news! Yes I do have a book but the wiring diagram for the glow plugs was just plain scary!

If the light is not coming on then the problem is not the glow plugs, not saying that they are ok though. The glow plugs are easily checked with a multi-meter (no need to even remove them) by just checking them individually, after removing the bus bar between them, to make sure they are not open circuit. The problem is most likely to be the glow plug relay, again easy to check with a multi-meter. you just need to find it.
If you do need glow plugs I'm sure you can pick them up cheaper than that as I purchase a set for a Prado the other day for $28 each.

will check (and find) the relay this weekend. Two types of glow plugs on the Patrol (3 x $51 and 3 x $81). That was from Nissan so I'm sure there are cheaper around as you mentioned.

Not sure what life span glow plugs have??

I've had 5 diesels over the last 20 years, Mazda B2200, Rodeo, Ford Courier (Mazda Bravo), GQ Patrol 4.2 & now 4Runner 2.8D and have never changed a glow plug. Also worked on tractors and same. So I sense that glow plugs last a fair while. Others may have different experiences though.

then that's good news. Sounding very much like an electrical issue.
