Hi All, we are moving to
brisbane shortly and I have a couple of questions.
1. Is there much secluded
camping withing a 3 or 4 hour drive of BSB? I can appreciate that you may not want to post details, we are prepared to do our own research etc.
2. Considering current
water restrictions up there, how difficult is it to grow a vegie garden if you don't have a
water tank? We are in melb at the moment and it is cool enough to be able to manage it, I am not sure if
Brisbane's beautiful weather will be a help or hinderance.
Thanks in advance.

There's heaps of
camping around up here more like 2-3 hours away
It has been raining for the past 3 days and I think you will be fine to get a little patch going

The fruit flies pick there own fruit and carry them away up here . If you can get to the bananas before the fruit bats , possums then you are better than me . Snails and slugs are a foot thick here . Other than that you should be ok .

I gave up on my veggie patch a couple of years ago. Watering it was just too hard. I now have a
tank so I'm growing again. In the summer you need plenty of
water up here. If the place you get doesn't have a
tank they're not too expensive to put in, and Capt Bligh gives you a few bucks towards it too.

I can probably get you a long boat to allow the evacuation of said captain or would you rather a plank?

Brisbane dams just today have gone over 40% which will ease restrictions slightly. I'm not sure of the details but should make a vegie patch more viable.
And yes, plenty of secluded
camping within 4 hrs of
Brisbane. Even 2 hrs will get you to quite a few good spots. Do a search on the
forum - you'll find a few good threads.

For
Camping, Fraser Island,
Moreton Island, Stradbroke Islands, Areas around Kelilworth, Around
Sundown National Park, The varous 4wd Parks and around Woodenbong in northern NSW.
Generally weather is better for
camping and the flys are not as bad in summer. But when it rains it is much much heavier than in Victoria so you need gear that can handle it.
Unfortunately, IMHO there are no 4wd destinations (Except for the islands) that are as good as the Victorian High Country anywhere near
Brisbane.

You could purchase the book "Dirty Weekends in SE QLand". Definately not secluded
camping spots but could be a starting point.
Cheers

Hi Howdy Doody,
I do not think its quite as bad as some of the replies suggest. We have a nice garden and orchard with 28 fruit tress quite easily with just
tank water. (bananas, paw paws, avocadoes, custard apple, tropical peach, peachcot, brazilian cherry, lychee,
orange, mandarin, limes, lemon etc etc. ) . With different varieties you can almost get fruit all the year round with some – eg we have 5 varieties of avocadoes fruiting over 10 months of year. Fruit fly is a problem but there are organic ways to deal with it – try Wild May Essential Oils – attract and kill males. Also a bag over banana bunches will protect. With a little effort you can produce beautiful fruit and veges provided you have good soils.
Water restrictions will ease next week as the dams are now at 40%.
What part of
Brisbane are you looking at- are you considering inner city areas or outer areas with larger blocks of land.
We have a beautilful 3000M2 block of vacant land for sale on Northside of
Brisbane. Very fertile red soil in our area.
Cheers,
GPM

Yes Enoggera is on northside about 7 or 8 ks from CBD.
Hope your shift goes
well - Bsb is a great place to live

$20 redirection connection for our
water pipe into a wheel barrow, and that's just for the duck.
We find we can keep our 3" x 5" garden bed going by, if needed, cold
water drained from hot
water taps before it gets hot, the kids' bath
water, even the washing
grey water rinse washes when there's no rain at all for weeks (using something marked as good for gardens) - even with our front loader, still get buckets of
grey water.
We do have a
tank but not getting it connected and in place until the deck goes up.

Howdy doody; What kind of vegies are you planning on growing? First you ask for a secluded
camping spot & then how about growing vegies. Am I being overly suss or are you planning on growing those spikey leaf tomatoes???

hahahaha, I didn't think of that - you may be on to something. Nah, literally for edible vegies.

The drought is not as bad as you might expect in terms of basic gardening. From time to time the lawns go brown but mostly are adequately rain watered to look okay.
growing veggies might be a little challenging depending on what your growing and what sort of area you need to
water. if you have a
water tank and just want a few veggies you should be okay. If you are expecting to
water half an acre though you will be disappointed. I just have a regular house block and the weeds are doing very
well indeed thank you!!
You will love
Brisbane and I hope everyone will make you feel welcome.
cheers

Thanks David. My Veg Patch here is about 2m x 6m and manageable with current
water restrictions and lots of buckets from shower, but you have far tighter restrictions in Bsb. It's amazing, our
water storages are at 30%, yours 40% yet we are allowed to use so much more
water than you... Needs a bit of explaining I think, a Vic State Gov too frighted to push to level 4 restrictions right before an election. We now have 3a!

Thanks Rod, I am really looking forward to it - especially the temperature. I am freezing in
Melbourne at the moment. I will just have to get used to the humidity.
