I am a quadriplegic living near Coffs Harbour NSW, I am setting up an off-road camper capable of being self sufficient for several weeks without access to power or water. It is quite a unique design manufactured from a 3 horse float.
I have just purchased a 2003 Toyota Land-cruiser & am in the design stage of making a swing-arm with winch to give me access to the ‘cruiser’.
What I am looking for is a 12 volt winch with a remote pendant. Ideally- low current draw, compact only needs to draw 2 metres (wire/rope) but in both directions and needing only to lift a maximum of 120kg’s.
Any ideas?

PBJ,

Try the small Warn winches designed for self recovery on ATV/4 wheel motorcycles - bit expensive. Or probably a better option - one of the electric boat winches that go on a boat trailer for boat recovery. Finally, a low amp draw winch may be modified from an electric anchor winch - although again - boat supplies are more expensive than 4by shops.

All the best - and post a few photos when you've finished -

Try miller and whitworth marine stores or catalogue, they used to stock small winches for pulling boats on to trailers and for lifting tenders on to davits.

Hi pbj

Have you considered using Hydraulics rather than a Winch set up?
not knowing your requirements, re Assistance from another person
or you being Self Sufficient, I recently saw a Toyota Troopy set up
for a person with the same needs, He gained entry from the rear of the Vehicle, with access to the front, the vehicle also had a Tow Bar,
but the Lifting Platform was designed to clear the Tow Bar when
operated, and sit Vertical when not in use, allowing the vehicle to Tow ect,

I hope you have success with your project, and I am sure there will
be other people on this Forum who can assist with information.

Cheers

Hi PJB,

Have a look on ebay or something similar, I think they may have the item you are after. I have a similar one (with remote) fitted to the boat rack on our Landcruiser.

If the link below doesn't work just go to ebay, cars etc and type in a search for winches

Hope to see you on the road soon.

Thankyou for your help I am pursuing this ebay winch as it seems to be perfect as I will be able to utilise this for several requirements in my setup.

I got a catalogue at work the other day that had a smallish 12V winch with a pendant control. I think it was Repco but not 100% certain. I can check on Monday and let you know. I reckon it was in their trade catalogue & it was under a couple hundred bucks.

Thanks PBJ - you put the problems I think I have into proportion.

More practically: as others have mentioned one of the boat winches is probably the way to go. Mechanical engineers will tell you better than I but allow at least twice the "snatch" weight of your body - I'd guess that's around 500kg (not meaning you weight 250! :)

Another thought is that, usually, the pendant operation of these winches is a simple "on/off" type of switching - will this be suitable for you to manoeuvre yourself into position or will you need a proportional control?

I don't know whether you know of Jol Fleming. He's been quadaplegic for 26 years and runs his own 4wd tour company out of Alice Springs. Might be worth a call to bounce a few ideas???

Excuse my ignorance but how does a quadraplegic with no use of arms or legs set up a off road camper ?

Hi
Good question. Many people have a missunderstanding of spinal injuries. After my original accident (1990) I was quite capable though confined to a light weight wheelchair, I was able to drive with the assistance of hand controls (a lever behind the steering wheel).

I used to play wheelchair rugby, drove a WRX and worked.

In 2000 I had an operation on my neck for a 'post traumatic' syst in my spinal coloumn (c7 up to my brain stem) I survived this dangerous operation however lost useful function in my left arm. This meant I am now unable to drive, play wheelchair rugby and now rely on an electric chair for mobility.

Where there is a will there is a thousand ways. Before my original accident I used to do a lot of bush walking and since my late teens I have always wanted to see outback Australia.

I have assistance, belong to a 4WD club in Coffs Harbour & am very determined.
My dream is becoming a reality.
