Captain Sparkles-Paula D (NSW)
Heading up to northern Queensland next week, thinking about doing the cape, depending on weather and actual road conditions.
Travelling in nissan patrol, not towing anything but with the average load on board.
Would like to hear from any travellers who have been on these roads in the last few days.
We will be travelling by ourselves. It it wise to do this area without company or should we wait until our travelling companions can come and we head for another trek.

Also check post 3853.
I don't have any detail yet but it is my understanding they are mobile again. So to save BIG bucks check the depth first.

the cape road is a main highway, you will have no dramas as there are vehicles coming and going both ways, so you will not be stranded with no help. You will end up
camping and travelling with mobs of people so enjoy the trip and people around you .Col

Just got back on friday night (I live near
Cairns).
like a highway, went up the telegraph track and then took the northern bypass and came back down the OTT to Cockatoo
creek and then cut through the heathlands to join the southern bypass .Grader is between
Bamaga and ferry.
I have a Gq patrol (intercooled turbo diesel with rear air locker)and towed a camper trailer. i never used the locker.
road is from reports very corigated on southern bypass from Captain Billys turn off to joining the OTT (north side) thus taking a run through the heathlands on return. IF heading south on the OTT you may need help getting up one of the crossings near Bramwel r/house. Walk all
creek crossings, some have holes and deeper parts these are avoidable by walking and checking.
Alot of vehicles have run into problems at Nolan
creek (north of Twinn Falls on OTT) I took the bypass and ferry crossing. Some corrigations on northern by pass but as always drive to conditions.
hope i have been some help
Hilly

Thanks hillbillie, all you advice is greatly appreciated. We,ve travelled
the desert and found if you travel to road conditions, the fewer the problems are.

Nolan's claimed quite a few last year too. Its funny - you rarely hear it mentioned yet its just about the worst after Gunshot.
