Hi all, wondering if anyone out there has done the Gibb River Road lately. Just want to know how rough it is at the moment and maybe which camps have been packed out. Only interested in the actual Gibb River Road not the Kalumburu or Mitchell Falls Road. Doing it in a about a weeks time and just want to plan where to camp and how many days we will spend along there.

Also how many tyres did you do on the trip?

Thanks in advance.

LOL...Well this week a young fella in a Mitsubishi Lancer did it and only dented his muffler and shook a suspension bolt out and a japanese couple in a magna got from Derby to the El-Questro turnoff and then bounced the transmission sump on a rock and lost there oil.
We were just talking at work today, makes us look like mugs in four wheel drives and dont make it.....grin

Squiz,
I reckon this will become more common. High price of fuel combined with the desire to to "the impoossible" might mean the Barina/Gemini will make a comeback :-))))

In the olden days it was the Holden Panelvan that did these trips.

A friend from work was out there 2 weeks ago - school holidays = heaps of people, but that didn't stoip them from having a great trip. Sounded like the road was in good nick (compared to what it was like in the past).

They had 3 vehicles. One with new tyres, no punctures. The others had near bald tyres and 3 punctures.

Road is fine, its in good condition. Has quitened down now school holidays are over. As for camp sites, any one is a good place. Tyres, depends on tyre condition and pressure. You are not alone on this road anymore, you will see someone every day.

Hi Kroozer - We went through during June - Roads were mostly really good, and not too many people. We ran tyres on 25 psi all round and had no tyre problems, and wouldn't expect any even if the road was more corrugated if travelling at a speed right for the conditions, what ever they may be. Our trip was planned to avoid July rush.

We spoke to caravanners today who have just come through, and it was their first real dirt road trip - they thought the road was terrible, and didn't even tackle the Kalumburu Road at all. It doesn't take many day of idots screaming along the road a speed to build up the corrugations, so i can understand this. They said the region was packed - with vehicles with camper trailers in droves racing through at speed. The found only good bit was Derby to Windjana Gorge t/off - freshly formed new road.

Riverside free camping has been banned (as reported here some weeks ago) almost everywhere there are no toilets. There a gravel pits you can find and sneak into - but we found it better to stay at the campsite for (eg Windjana Gorge or Bells Falls) and walk early before it gets too hot.

Favourite campsite was just across the King Edward River on the Mitchell Falls road - but you would need to be early to find a space this time of year.

Maybe plan for May June next year?
