I got a Hema Navigator for my birthday a few days ago, and while working my way through the instruction manual, i noticed that it contains a soft ware program called Memory maps as well as Oziexplorer. Can anyone tell me what Memory maps does. Is it similar to Oziexplorer or does it do some thing different.

Thanks for replying Richard. Ive had a look at the Memory map web site. I thought it might be similar to Oziexplorer, but I'm a GPS virgin and I though I'd ask the opion of those on the forum more knowledgeable then me.

I've just had a look at the video on there site, the programs look very much the same.

I have used Ozie PC & CE for around 6 years now and think it is great, the best part is it is made in Aust so support is great

Thanks Richard,
Ive downloaded the trial version of Oziexplorer and Im playing around with it now. Oziexplorer was installed on the gps when I got it but there dosnt seem to be any way to connect the gps to my pc using the soft ware in the gps. But like I said Im new to the gps world and I might be missing something.

Having read some of the stuff on there site you may have to buy OziExplorer for your PC so you can do all your planing on it as the CE version does a lot less then the PC version.

I also see that Memory Maps is an Australian product as well, pity I have a PDA and a NavNet 1000 computer in the Troopy already as I would sure have a look at one of these.

Cheers

Hello
OziCe has changed considerably (for the better?) since this comparison so some opinions/conclusions drawn by the reviewer may not be correct...though for that matter memory map may have changed also??

One main benefit of using OziExplorer is that it is used by a substantially greater number of people so data exchange and help with issues is much better.

Cheers

Hi Cruznoz,
Ozi files are directly compatible with the ExplorOz Plot Swap system if you are after some resources.
see them here-
Plot swaps

Makes it easy for you to swap and load tracks and plots from ExplorOz's database.

Explained here if you are unfamiliar

ExplorOz Plot swap explained

It's not my area of expertise, but as I am also wrapping my head around a Hema Navigator, I guess Ill be able to help out a bit more in the future if needed.
As for the Navigator, I am impressed with what it can do off the shelf. (especially with an 8 gigabyte SD card and 1:25000 digital topographic raster maps.)

Hope this helps,.
cheers

Thanks Kerry,
Im impressed with the Hema too. As a matter of interest do you know how full the sd card is that comes with the gps. Im having some issues loading more maps onto it and im wondering if it may be already full. If i have to go to a bigger sd card whats the best way of transfering the data from one card to the other

Hi Cruz
There is about 50 mb free on the card so it will fill up fast..

Im sure there are easy ways to load most maps into it - many will Just copy straight in to the folder described in the manual.

Hema Navigator Manuals

BUT!

I got the Navigator because I wanted lots of detail as we walk a fair bit as well as 4wd. So I wanted detailed topographic maps.

Again this is not my forte but I have Oziexplorer so I bought the Sunmap raster maps CD (has about 400 1:25000 scale raster maps for parts of SE Qld and the odd parts of the north )

You can scan and calibrate maps yourself with Ozi but I havn't resorted to that as yet.

I figure for every 100 maps I will need about 1.6 gigs
I just went out and bought an 8 gig SDHC (High capacity secure digital card)
You mayneed a special card reader to read these cards if you want to read them on your computer via the USB port as the older card readers will just not read them. A normal 4 gig SD card will be fine but 8 gig SD HC cards are cheap only $60-$80
You can just use the USB cable from the Navigator but it is a bit slower.
You will find owning a copy of Oziexplorer is almost essential to get the most out of a Navigator.
I have been loading 1:25,000 topo maps onto mine using oziexplorer and associated software (30 maps loaded so far)

How to load Ozixplorer maps

You can download a program here which wil convert digital topographic raster maps to a format readable in pda's and the Hema navigator

Convert ecw maps to OZFx3 format

I export them from the Raster viewer,to a folder on my computer in ECW format and name them. I then import them with Ozi (File; Import Maps: ECW Maps) into a folder set aside for OZI which converts them to a .map file I then run the OZFx3 program to pull them from Ozi convert them to ozfx3 and it loads them into the Navigator.

Simple once you do it once - just takes a while to convert and load.

Once the raster maps are in the unit, it will find the next map and automatically load it as you drive off the previous map screen.

Again this is just my particular need but I think everybody would like this level of detail. Mind you not every state is putting out much in the way of 1:25,000 maps I am now looking for 1:50,000 maps as I find the 1:250,000 maps don't give enough detail.

There hasn't been any reviews about it so far I think everybody who owns one has been pre occupied learning what they can do with it.

Re maps - Check Michael in our Shop michael@exploroz.com as he knows a lot more about what maps are available for other states and should be very competitive on price.
Oh and for those - who are wondering Yes they work well. Street navigation is excellent ran around Brisvegas most of today and it taught me a few things about the fastest way around the city, I questioned its decisions twice and twice it proved me wrong.

4WD navigation on the 1:25,000 maps is very accurate, as soon as I loaded the 1st topo for my place and stepped outside for a trial run, it placed the cursor right in front of my house.

Has been accurate all the way so far. Does everything they said it would do - was worth waiting for.
regards
