Went around to have a chat with Jim this morning about replacing the tent section with a roof top tent.

After that a mate turned up at the house in the afternoon, and had a look at how the tent is secured to the steel frame.

Consensus was that it would be a mongrel to remove and refit if I was going to sell the trailer in the future. Meaning that I couldn't use the bed support frame.

I'll ring the Camel Group on Monday and asked them for a quote to deliver a new lift up frame to Melbourne.

Jim will then bolt some Marine ply on the top of the new frame.

The mate and I will cover the wood with Aluminium sheet, then install the roof top tent.

This will reduce the trailer weight by 100kgs and give me a pretty quick set up for a bed. The whole rig (including the car) is then able to carry 220 lts of fuel and 100lts of water.

The Polaris awning coming off the car has one side wall, but I'm going to order another one for a bit of protection against the cold and wind up in the High Country. Very quick set up.

After all that my question is, Which is the best roof top tent?

Regards

Kim

K&DD,

I have a Howling Moon Deluxe 1400 wide, had it for 4 years and it has been brilliant, the cover keeps it dry and clean.it has been out in the desert and many other extremely dusty places and the tent itself is spotless, never cleaned the tent itself ever and yet it looks like new.easy to erect and pack up,single person can set up in about 5 minutes ( full set up) or quick o/nite set up in about 3min.good high density matteress, the outer is canvas-not that light type fly material one(eezy awn 1500) maybe google howling moon to see one,IF you are interested i am selling mine due to the expansion of the family, looking at C/Ts now. paulmelmoo at optusnet dot com dot au chers Paul

Have a look on ebay. Item# 130241556953. There are others there like the ARB etc. Just look up rooftop tents.

Same as my Open Sky and less then 1/2 the price.
