We have been travelling since May and havng a great trip. But here we are near Broome and our aged Troopy has a blown head gasket.

Today with the help of our travelling companions we will limp into Broome where we were yesterday. Van parks and mechanical workshops are full to overflowing.

Does anyone know of or could recommend a good mechanic in Broome and/or suggest accommodation options. We live in the vehicle but have a tent! We are not too pressed for time and can wait a bit for a mechanic provided we can get somewhere to stay.

Any suggestions? Use MM if preferred.

I don't think I'll be offering anything you wont have already worked out for yourself. Can't help re mechanics, but re accommodation....

When the C'van parks are full there are only 3 options I'm aware of. First is the 'shooting club' (quiter, but no good without motorised transport - I think it isa fair way to anywhere from there), second is the Police and Community Youth Centre (noiser but more grass, and more central, and within walking distance to chinatown) and the third is the park near South Beach (didn't ever stay here, but did note that even when all the parks were chokas, they were still accepting people with tents only.

Hi John and Val,

have lived in broome for a number of years now, vehicle servicing and repairs in Broome can be a bit of head ache at times, i had a good friend who used to run a workshop in town so used to use him for all work done to my troopy, he has since sold up and have had problems with others places i have used. I have since sold the troopy and brought a late model 100 series gxl so have been using Broome Toyota for all servicing, so far i have found them to be good, the main reason i use them is A) Looks better in log books when going to sell and B) if there are any problems when travelling i can go to the nearest Toyota dealer for warranty.

A guy i play cricket with is doing his apprenticship at toyota so will give him a call and see who else he recommends.

Accomodation side of things could be difficult, if you don't have luck i may be able to help you's out.

I am currently out at work on a mine site, if you can email me your contact details i'll give you a bell,

jjohnson@kimberleynickel.com

Regards,

Josh

I had my car serviced at a place called Broome Mechanical. I had no complaints. They will drop you into town and pick you up when the car is finished. One of the tourist books last year had a discount of 5% off labour costs if you mentioned the add. Sorry but I can't remember which one.

From the stamp in my service book, their address is 1Tanami Rd and ph number 91936006.

The caravan park that still takes tents is the Roebuck Bay. It will be very crowded.

The PCYC is just around the corner. As Tim said the Roebuck Bay and PCYC are both within walking distance of town.

Club Shed Automotive is the mechanic i use. Murray Glare is the man you want to speak to. I get all my work done there, have tried everywhere else around town and found them to be the best and also the cheapest. The local Toyota workshop is good also but i prefer Club Shed as they are only a small workshop and seem to do a really good job. They are on Blackman street, and can usually get you in within a day. Mobile number is 0417996909.
And dont worry i have no affiliation what so ever with them, just a happy camper.

Thank you everyone for your valued comments. This forum is a great place for constructive ideas, and when you're thousands of kms from your usual support networks, a very valuable recource.

We've made it back to Broome and landed in an excellent caravan park for at least a few days (Tarangau - absolutely full up, but recognised our situation and found a corner for us - highly recommended)

Will follow up on the suggested mechanical services first thing Monday.

Cheers

Optimism!!! Plus it's a big leak, a gusher, not a dribble!!! Like close to a litre into one cylinder in 15 minutes when running. (It's an old petrol Troopy.)

Cheers

Can someone tell me why Broome is overflowing with people, MINING maybe?? Has everyone that has moved there, live in the van Parks??? Or is it the swinging hub of Australia for the Grey Nomads?? Possibly not the Latter!! Michael.

Michael,
Mate, it's probably the latter! We stayed there in 2002 about this time of year (before the mining scene really took off), and found ourselves pushed up against the boundary fence in a caravan park that bordered the road to the wharf. Man, it was noisy! Our ears were literally ringing with constant traffic noise from 6am - 9pm.

It was much more pleasant when we reached our next stop at Derby. So much so, we stayed an extra night in Derby to recover from our "Broome experience".

Cheers, Matt

How things have changed.

In June 1991 we arrived at the Caravan Park behind the resort and booked in for 3 days - no problem !

Hi,

Be very careful of the main RACWA in town. Posted on this once before so won't go into detail. They are an agent for the auto club and the main towing crew in town.

If you use them make sure the quote is in writing (better still blood) and check every bit of work done. Though if you get quotes they'll be the dearest, will see you're a tourist.

G'day John,

Your probably already sorted but I thought that i better let you know that we had a pretty miserable time using Top End motors in 2005 and would steer away from them if you can.

Kind regards

I had some work done by a "Diesel specialist" in Broome and they caused much more damage than they fixed, their name has not appeared so far in this thread so be careful if looking any further.

I was recommended to them by a local spare parts store, I found out later the "diesel specialist" did the servicing on the spare parts stores petrol powered race car...
