We are Leaving 2nd week of August to cross the Simpson heading towards Birdsville - Have been told it gets very windy and will need flywire screen around cooking area for protection ???
Anyone out there come across this or have we been advised by over cautious people??

I wouldn't try eating the Simpson Dessert. Might be a bit gravelly on the palate :-)

However, to your question. The desert winds normally blow in the warmer months from November through to end of May. Winter monmths are normally free of excessive winds. The advice you have received may be a tad over cautious.

Flywire screen? Take some wood with you and cook on an open fire.

Cheers

Hi Leeanne
Yes, as Willem has said. Would suggest you take those flymesh hats though as they keep the flys off you whilst setting up the camp etc. At this time of the year though, the flys shouldn't be a problem. Have fun, may cross tracks with you as we will be coming down from Jervois into Bridsville around 12th or so of Aug.

I've never found the need for what you've suggested.
We've had some big winds in summer out there, but August is usually a great time.
Wind normally dies down at dusk anyway.

Like others have said above. August temperatures in the Simpson will be high twenties and low thirties during the day and possible below zero temperatures at night. Because of the still cool to cold nights, you should see very few, if not no flies during the day.

Enjoy the Simpson.

Cheers

Hi there, we have just come accross the French line and it is very windy as the day warms up and cools down Some times its windy all night somtimes it dies down, so just put the back of your tent into the wind or face your car into the SE and hide behind them to cook.
There are no flies at the moment to speak of.
Watch out for the people who dont use there radio on channel 10 to let you know they are coming. We passed at least 50 people on the French line. They will need trafic lights soon
Some people are towing trailers and others are not letting their tyres down enough to get up the dunes easily and cutting them to shreds -- "18psi and 2nd low is the way to go"-- for an easy pleasant journey.

Safe trip
We are off to do the Canning Stock route in the morning after the 5000klm service on the new 200 in Alice Springs.

I forgot say thay at night it is very cold -2 deg C so rug up well. Day time it is 15-20 deg C nice but windy cusing the dunes to have sharp steep tops travelling from the East which makes it a bit of fun going over the top.

Regards Grahame

We did it in late July--early August, a couple of years back..
Weather was great..
Day temp never above 30.... night temp varied from +12 to -5..
So I suggest that you get a -10 rated sleeping bag, just in case..you can always open it, or lay on top of it, on warm nights..

Wind died down, just on dark most nights,, but there is no guarantees there, just camp accordingly..It can blow a gale out there.,, just have to adapt .

Flies not a problem, better to cook up under led lights, they seem to attract less critters, and only open lids of pots for split second to check, otherwise you might be having "moth stew" !

Above all be safe, and enjoy..

Tyred down to somewhere between 15-18 psi..

Cheers
Bucky
