Someone told me that the road from Gatton to
Warwick via
Allora was better than going over Cunningham's Gap. The main range road to
Toowoomba we found slow going with the van - Cunningham's Gap was a lot better - but we were wondering if anyone has any feedback regarding this alternative route.
Thanks.

Hi Straddie
The preferred route of native
Goondiwindi people is via Millmerran. The roads west of
Toowoomba are flat and open with 110Km limit from Pittsworth.
Have a relative who does this trip every day in a B-Double full of fuel.

Sounds like you are talking about Hieffer
Creek rd. Go just past Gatton and then take a left towards Clifton.
This road is very windy but I do believe the gradient is much less than Cunninghams or
Toowoomba range.
Half way through the road is a
rest area at the bridge which is good for a
free camp overnight if required.

Forgot to add that once across the range (pretty drive anyway) you go to Clifton (left on reaching the highway anf then first right) and from there go through to Leyburn and onto
Goondiwindi. (Bitumen all the way)

Alan,
We're heading to
Goondiwindi via Millmerran this weekend on our way to
Adelaide, via
Nindigully and
Bourke.
We're towing a van from the
Gold Coast and we're a bit over the
Canungra,
Beaudesert,
Cunninghams Gap route (only did it last weekend). Having done the Range climb upto
Toowoomba with the van before I'm keen to give that a miss as
well if at all possible.
Your suggested route sounds the go. Is the route from Gatton to Clifton suitable for a van as you say its windy?

Yes the road is suitable for caravans even if there are plenty of turns. Trucks also use it. Two lanes wide all the way.
Interesting area - after leaving Gatton and starting up to the range there is a spectacular road cutting.
When you get to Gatton (don't take bypass) go through the town and on towards helidon on the old highway. The turnoff to Clifton/
Warwick is
well marked and is about 5+ km out of town.
Enjoy your travels
Alan

There is only three bitumen roads over the range (oops, Mary's falls I think is now bitumen too, but steeper than
Cunninghams Gap.), Cunningsham Gap, Heiffer Ck, and
Toowoomba Range. Blackbutt further north not worth considering for
Goondiwindi.
Heiffer
creek less grade, but more turns, so prefer
Toowoomba and go via Millmerin. Find with the
Toowoomba range it is steep near the top and with a load may be down to 2nd in the pajero, but it is only short.
Via Millmerin doesn't have the hills west of
Warwick, so is a flatter run, and I find it about 15 minutes quicker
Brisbane to
Goondiwindi.

Heiffer
Creek Road is narrow and winding in parts. Trucks use it and they aren't slow so beware of blind corners. I have towed my van up there a couple of times, and also stayed at the Heiffer
Creek Rest area. We prefer the
Toowoomba climb at the moment, it is steep but also short so the hard climb is not a long one.
