Gu rear tower collapse

Have just found that the rear drivers side top spring mount is torn away from the chassis and is resting against the floor heavist van i tow is approx 1500 kg plus minimum gear in vehicle,is there anything special to repairing this ie more than putting back into place welding and adding more steel supports,any advice appreciated thankyou,its a 2002 3litre with 250000k

Its been posted before so its a relatively common thing.
Search the archives as some posts had photos and links to sites of the repairs etc required.

Yes, this is a known problem and one which I have been keeping an eye on. When I get my chassis repaired and strengthened soon (see previous thread/s if you don't know what I'm referring to), I will be getting them to weld-in strengtheners for the spring towers too. Mine were noticed as being cracked about 18 months ago when I had new, heavier suspension fitted in Adelaide. The fitter did a welding repair job on them at the time, but now that the chassis is bare at the back of my rig, it is an ideal time to get them strengthened with struts welded to the chassis cross members fore and aft of the towers.

You need to get something done about yours fairly soon as the fuel lines and brake lines reside on the top of the driver's side tower and they can be crushed if nothing is done.

There is a mob in Melbourne area called ATOC Engineering who make a strengthening bracket that can be welded in as well..... but I'm not sure how good it is or how much effort it takes to get it added. I would envisage the body will have to be unbolted and lifted (possibly only slightly......4" or so maybe) in order to get the job done properly.

ATOC have two methods of strengthening rear coil towers:

1. A 'weld-in' kit which you can buy and do yourself, or have it delivered so that someone local to you can do that.

2. A strengthening job that they do, which involves inserting a transverse ladder section and a couple of vertical plates (see photo) This type definitely requires the body to be partially removed, or in the case of a ute, the tray to be removed.

They do lots of this type of work, usually after the towers have failed.

A plate side to side is what I had in the ute. Weight, air spring assistance, and heavier springs commonly cause the problem in Patrols. They aren't made for heavy gear.

Hi Pepper,
Understand how you feel - I've just detected a crack in my GU wagon 2 weeks before heading to Darwin. Have finally managed to get someone in Perth who has done these things on Patrols before, and hope to get it fixed next week.
Mine's a wagon, which has never towed anything, but has been well-loaded in the past.
Have ordered the kit from ASOC in Vic which the local guy will install. He's mainly done utes, so will let you know how he goes with the wagon fix, incl what the ASOC kit is like. The ASOC guys says that the body doesn't have to be lifted, just the axle lowered and springs, etc removed to get access. A longrange tank complicates the fix a bit.
