Janet,
Personally I don't like them due to the shape and waste a lot of space. I found the dark grey with red lids from Bunnings very good as they are supposedly unbreakable, and can be sat next to each other without wasting too much space.

Hello Janet,
For touring about I use the 55-litre transparent storage tubs from BigW as I prefer to be able to see into them. They cost a little more than their more basic counterparts. I judge them to be more robust and much less likely to cut you than those you can buy from the cheap-as chips-stores. They stack well and withstand the punishment of rough roads provided they are tied down properly.

I place two tiers of three 55-litre boxes across the cabin of my dual cab Hilux - the rear seat has been removed - heavy items in the bottom boxes. These boxes are tied down with an adjustable strap. A 60-litre box sits in the tub of the ute adjacent to the Engel fridge and acts as a pantry.

The boxes are usually covered with towels or clothing that needs drying along the way and as such their contents are mostly obscured. Therefore, searching out black containers would be a waste of time for me.

A friend of mine has black boxes you described. On a recent trip he had to take most of them out of his vehicle to find the item he was looking for; his wife packed the boxes. Had they been transparent, his search might have been much easier.

Cheers,
Netnut

Janet the best thing to do is work out how much area you have as in length, width and height and then go and find crates that fit that area, if you grab any old crate you will find you have wasted space.

Work out what you want in them to before buying.

Have a look on the net or there are specialised places that sell them.

The squarer the better if space is an issue. I use the ki-tab heavy duty crates (get them at bunnings) - more expensive but maximum space and can be stacked.

Hows it going Janet,

I have been using the same ones as those for 4 years , including one 4 month trip, we go camping a fair bit and although cheap these have stood up well.

With a cargo rack in the car I fit 4 of these stacked in, I normally use tie downs with them as they are made to lock together

Hey Janet.

As some have said:

The Kitab containers from Bunnings are great. They come in three sizes - 23l, 45l and 65l and can be stacked.
Dimensions are 600x400xx120 / 220 / 330

They are square and dont waste space like other types. Also come in different colours for easy ID of contents.

Lids are also available however I have made up a wooden lid that covers 2 side by side containers and holds the stack together when strapped down. Doubles as the bread board.

Another great container is the nylex hobby cube. Big W used to sell them. Bunnings sells these but may not stock them. They are available from Ikon Plastics. Also at Bunnings is a small Cube 160x160x135 - 8 of these fit snugly into the nylex cube.

Happy packing
