We are looking at heading off for an extended trip and we would like to have the ability to travel over dirt roads in the outback.
Does anyone have suggestions or ideas for vans that are suitable for this kind of trip ?
We plan to be gone for some months at a time so would like a little more comfort than a camper trailer.
Do we really need the Kedron styled full off road van or is there an alternative. We do not travel fast and do not long hauls in a single day. We just want something that will hopefully hold together on unsealed outback roads.

Hi Dug - its a long way home without your van if something does happen. My husband refused to get anything until we could get the Bushtracker. Lots of them on the GRR, as
well as a few other makes, but for caravans, BT were the most popular. Some of the other makes (of which we saw one or two only) are listed in a recent
Gibb River Road thread which i replied to.
The alternative is to take a tent, and do the rough stuff by leaving the van parked up somewhere. Have to come back for it though.

We plan to have a tent for the rough stuff and leave the van nearby. We would like to do roads like the outback highway and the like.
Well used dirt roads not 4 Wheel drive tracks.

Hi Doug
By the Outback Highway do you mean the
Great Central Road (between Uluru and
Laverton WA)? I expect that to be much worse than the
Gibb River Road which we completed during June.
Well used outback roads get far more corrugated than the lesser used tracks.

Yep that is part of what we call the outback highway
from
Boulia to
Laverton via alice.
We did the road in a 2WD ute in 2001 and it was not to bad. ( As long as you took it carefully )
We met about 50 citroen 2CV's coming the other way :-)

Dug, my
Adelaide mate has a good one for sale in the EO Trader section.

We travelled together from SA to Alice, then across the Tanami and
Gibb River Road in 2006; as I observed it, a strong and good unit. They are buying a new caravan. It is
well maintained. Nothing in this for me, it might be of interest to you.
All the best, RayJen

Supreme has got my vote too. I have a 16'6 2000 model and it has stood up very
well to some outback and offroad trips in that time.
Safe travels,
Trevor.

Hi DUG Just a suggestion.I was looking for a similar caravan and the sales man suggested that if I wasn't going off-off road to look at the Supreme Territory with the simpliicity
suspension as the off-
off road caravans are very heavy in the construction as they have to Warrant them.I ended up with this make and model and have taken it over the Useless Loop road and into a place called
Tamala Station.I would think if it can go in there it can just about go anywhere.Like you said, if you don't drive too fast.
