I'm putting out this call on behalf of Motherhen Bushtracker. She didn't ask me to so I hope she doesn't mind. She and her husband are stuck in
Kununurra with a nebulous low voltage, solar issue.
They had their solar panels replaced under warranty and now have a "hot metal" smell in the van.
She is having intermittent access issues with getting onto EO as
well.
But if anyone can send her an MM or an answer here with advice on who may be able to help locally I'm sure that would be a good thing.
Last thing they want is a fire on the way home.
Unfortunately I can't offer any other way of contacting them.
cheers and thanks

thanks Gone Bush
We have new solar panels - putting in more power than the dodgy ones ever did. Prostar regulator or wiring from panels to regulator may be under shock or inadequate.

Hi MOTHERHEN
What size panels they would have to be putting out a lot of amps to overload wiring to state where you can smell it.?
Can you track source of heat , odour.?
ARE THE PANELS INSTALLED CORRECTLY & by whom.
Are the batteries discharging back thru the wiring ie a short some where.?
Is the smell all the time even @ night, when the panels are not putting out power ?

Best that you find the source of the heat. Feel by hand where the wiring, regulator or battery gets hot and replace that part.
Regards
Derek.

Motherhen,
Check all cable connections where they join solar panels, regulator, fuses and battery/s etc. for a loose connection and remedy it.

Hi Derek and thanks for replying. We are having the regulator checked out, although self test is OK, even if hotter than usual, according to the agents, not outside or normal operating. As it is just borderline for the new panels, we have ordered a larger capacity one. As system is now disconnected, panels are covered with cardboard, and i still think the smell is just evident - or i am getting paranoid. It was not there when we parked in the shade, but returned next morning when we parked in the sun. It is not from the battery area, nor from the fridge - just inside the van. All quite mystifying - but we don't want to continue if all is not
well. Wiring between panels and regulator is impossible to get at as put in when the van was built, but looks in perfect order at either end. Without the prostar there, we have tested the wires from solar with the multimeter, and got 6 v with panels covered (maybe a bit penetrates the cardboard?), and around 18.5 from each panels as uncovered. These seems normal. All wiring in the mini switchboard looks good and doesn't seem to be the source of heat or smell.
Will send rooster up on top again when it cools down a bit to double check for heat spots - although if outside the smell shouldn't come inside when the caravan is sealed down for travel.
Mystifyed Motherhen

goodday m/h
series of questions
are all connections tight?
is battery "boiling"or hot if yes check output voltage from regulator ?
is voltage from roof a steady voltage (i think ours is about 20odd volts)or jumping about (loose connection indicator)?

Hi M/H
I just see you said sealed down for travel . Does the controller have sufficient ventilation for cooling or is covered up by skirt or something? , the panels will still be charging while travelling. The controller needs adequate cooling or can overheat & be damaged,& possibly this is the residual odour of overheated electronics.
