hi all,
im looking for an fm car stereo brand/model which is better than the rest for picking up fm radio frequencies in remote areas.
do any of you know of any good ones, or what to look for in a car stereo. is it as simple as upgrading the antenna.
any help will be most appreciated. im really looking for something that will hold a good signal for 100km or more from the transmitter. if that's.
cheers.

Antenna is 95% of success. Put it on the roof and make it as long as possible and you will be amazed what your current radio can do.

When we go to our
shack on the Murray we can pick up most FM stations from
Adelaide. That's a 1 1/2 hour drive so maybe about 100 km as the crow flies and that's with the standard stereo in my Holden. Seem to get better reception down at river level than we do on top of the plain. And like any other radio device your antenna has a lot to do with it. 100 km isn't a long distance for an FM transmission from my experiences.

Swampy,
Check out the Mobile One web page. They sell a number of AM/FM aerials that would be ideal for you. Think they also do FM only ones too, but don't know what use they would be when you have an AM/FM radio in your vehicle.
As
well as the aerial, the transmitting power of the station would often be the decider, for up to 100km. Some of the ABC-FM stations in western Qld are only good for about 25km in radius.
Hooroo,
Bob.

I have a JVC radio with USB port, and I was picking up
Broken Hill and
Adelaide ABC in
Innamincka a couple of weeks ago.
IMHO a great radio.

The best FM tuners at present in normal priced stuff are Pioneer-if it is marked "supertuner" and JVC.
The Mobile 1 helical whip is great but it is not retractable being like a UHF CB aerial.
I have had
Townsville FM for over 160KM with my old Eurovox, which had the best tuners in the 80s and 90s( and may even now). along with a Mobile 1 whip.
So add Eurovox to the list but I have not seen them at volume
places . They do OEM like Holden, and Commodores have great range.

I get a max of about 200 road k's depending on the power of the transmitter/terrain and atmospheric conditions. Get Mackay fm to
Bowen then
Townsville fm from there on.
Some of the fm stations you only get 10k out of town so they must have pretty low powered transmitters.

Swampy, a couple of things at odds. FM is limited in range in comparison to AM but is often re-broadcast near small towns in remote areas. As DaveB says above,
Adelaide radio was romping in at
Innamincka, and on AM certainly in the evenings and mornings with a good antenna.
Some cars have more electronics and upset radios more - our Toyota is a bit like that and didn't get the AM as
well as the Nissan in the SD a few years back,
I was told a year or so back that Alpine has a very good AM tuner and that is what we have in the Karavan.
Reading your question again, 100km from the transmitter isn't remote mate;)))

Don't listen to FM that much, not enough range, maybe 200k at the most.
Mainly listen to AM , at least 300k, if not 400 to 500k or more if not too many hills and the power lines have at last disappeared.

I will frequently listen to AM on the HF... but I don't think FM works on the HF.

EUROVOX!!!
I dont know why I remember this or where the infor came from years ago but I specifically remember Eurovox radios (standard in VN - VR commodores) as having one of the best radio recievers on the market at the time.
Now I dont know if they have improved with time or if standard replacements have but they were certainly one of the strongest on the market when they were produced. Should be relatively cheap too haha!
All the best
Matt.
