Dave

The track you are talking about is a NO GO area of the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve. There is normally a sign stating that just south of the Lone Gum/Rig Road turn off. Not sure for the reasons behind this as there were some wells drilled in the area in the 70's and 80's. Maybe you can contact Dept of Environment and Heritage SA to get clarification on the status of the track

Cheers

G'day Sparra

Yes, the Rig Road carries on east for a few kilometres and then peters out around Lake Poolowanna. There is also an old airstrip just south of the track intersection with the Rig Road.

I still cannot see why this is a NO GO area. After all Parks and Reserves are there for the public to enjoy and not just for some Public Servants who think up all kinds of excuses to keep such an area to themselves. And its not like it is so extremely fragile as carrle are run in an area only a short way south of there. If they managed the area properly then I can see no reason why not to let travellers in to see that part of the country.

Re fines: If you go into an area which has been declared a NO GO zone, and you are by some unlucky chance, seen and fined, then you could consider it on the basis of it being a Commercial Track, like so many station tracks are these days, where you need to pay for the priviledge of driving them. Just a thought.

Hi Willem,

Forgive my total ignorance, but WHY is this track (and the others mentioned in the post) a no go area ?

I suppose I'm looking for both officially stated and other, perhaps more realistic reasons.

Nick

My theory is that it isn't a through road. If wet can be bottomless mud. There are many salt lakes and swamp area, when it rains!Tracks do not really go anywhere although it has been stated that passage has been made into the desert via Kalamurina Station

Maybe you can email DeptEnvironment and Heritage in Port Augusta or call the. They have a 1800 number. Can't put my hand on it right now.

Totally off limits and in fact any track not on the Westprint maps that accompany the DPP in the Park will incur a fine if you are caught on them.

Hi Dave

Some have driven from Kalamurina station camping area through to the Simpson.

You might get more input if you try the Lcool site or the station itself.

Most definitely a NO GO area - other problem is that it can be very wet in there at strange times.
