Hey guys, Ive got a 1977 FJ40 that Im working on and I changed the front diff to disc brakes. I installed the motor and gearbox and when I tried to add the front tailshaft I noticed that its 100mm to short.
Is there a difference in the diff sizes between a drum brake diff and disc brake diff?

any help would be great.

Hi Mat,
This may be a silly question but you did put the longer tailshaft on the front and the short one on the back?

The diffs as far as I remember are the same unless somone did a bodgy job on it sometime in the past.

Regards
Dave

What did the disc brake front diff housing come off ?
From 1990 on everything had a small front diff centre.

I don't suppose you have had the front springs out & put them back in the wrong way around & the front axle housing is sitting to far forward (i have seen this before)

I would have thought the short side of the spring goes to the rear (if thats what you mean by inwards)

I say that because ,usually the competion rock climber guys turn their springs around for a longer wheelbase.

I wouldnt have thought it would shift the axle forward by 100mm though.
More like 30-40mm

Hi Ross,

Thanks that was the problem I had the springs around the opposite way. The short side of the spring was facing towards the front bumper instead of the rear.

thanks for all the help.
