Hi fellow travellers,
I am looking at taking the family on a 'driving holiday' from
Melbourne across to
Adelaide in October. We will be doing all the normal touristy things along the way, but I would love some feedback on
places to stay, things to see and towns worth stopping in.
There is so much information on-line, but all seem a little biased towards certain towns.
We will be looking to stay in cabins, as the little ones have not been 'bush christened' yet.
So, any personal experiences, good caravan parks, sites etc would be appreciated. Any towns worth staying at ones to avoid...
I am hoping to get my 'mud fix', in the
Otways, but it all depends on the minister of fun and finances and the two rug rats in the back.
My starting rough itinery is
Geelong,
Apollo Bay,
Port Fairy,
Mount Gambier,
Kingston,
Adelaide.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

One of the more interesting and less
well know
places you might like to check out is Ewans Ponds. Don't bother unless you have goggles/
snorkel though - there is not much to see from the surface - but a very interesting fresh
water snorkelling site. Not sure what the weather will be like either - the
water is pretty cold from memory. Worth a look though if you like that sort of thing.

Ewens is a great place to visit. Yes they are dam cold year round.
Another place that only locals seem to go to is Cape Douglas and Jones Beach. It is out and just Nth of
Cape Northumberland.
If you want a mud map or Oziexplorer plot, email me on blazesport@tsn.cc

Robe is a great spot, its on the coast about 40-50 kms south of
Kingston. There are some really good tracks through the sandhills of
little dip conservation park which is just out the back of
robe.
Lakeside caravan park at
robe is very good also.Plenty of shops for the misses to look through aswell.
Happy
trails

Nice suggestion Tim Owen. Mt Gambier has some really interesting
places. Travel up to
Naracoorte to
the caves and
interpretive centre, then to Keith and turn west down the Gum
Lagoon road to have a look at the Coorong if you get time. Just beware that driving below the high tide mark is hazardous (IMHO anyway).
Chinamans Well is worth a look also. But you can go in at 42 Mile Crossing and come out at Tea Tree Crossing - wicked
sand dune there that will test your driving ability if going up. Although, if there are no other vehicles around it could be risky as its easy to get stuck, particularly on
the beach. Stay up near the foredune. Or you can just take the Millicent road, to
Beachport,
Robe, Cape Jaffa, and along the coast that way.
You can then go to
Adelaide via
Wellington, Langhorne
Creek, the
Adelaide Hills and finally, down the freeway.
I wouldn't say there are any towns to avoid along that route. If you're into wineries you can't miss the Coonawarra District.
Either way you go, the best thing about SA is there is lots to see at your own pace. Not much 4WDing near
Adelaide though.
Enjoy the trip.

Have a close look at Warrnambool, on way west - large town, quite a few attractions, possible activities with kids. There is a very good van
park with cabins at Narrawong, just east of
Portland. Excellent
park for little kids. Better than any of the options in
Portland. Check out
Beachport in SA too. Either here or
Robe would better than
Kingston, in my opinion.

You really should not miss,
Beachport or
Robe. Great beaches at the back of
Beachport and some nice sand driving too.
A bit of research and you can do some sand/beach driving from Port McDonall to
Robe.
If you can't find details, another post will help you I am sure.

Rough rule of thumb for beach driving around
Robe.
Flat wide beaches tend to be OK and generally hard relatively compacted sand. Often finer grained sand.
Steep beaches equals no go - very soft sand. Often larger grained sand with a lot of shell grit. You sink in easily when walking on it.
Tyre pressures down to 18psi.
