Hi, i just got my 01 GU back from a 4wd fitter after having a long range tank installed to replace the main tank, upon hopping in and starting up i noticed the sub tank light was on in the instrument cluster, so i went to turn it off and the switch (that is usually lit if the sub is in use) was not lit and did not light up once pressed.

I immediately turned around and went in to talk to the guy who i dealt with and we went to the fitter in the garage, he proceeded to tell me that he did not have to touch anything electrical and basically there was no way it was caused by fitting the new LR tank.

Does anyone know if you have to touch the sub or anything to do with the sub tank light on the dash? or anything to do with the switch that is now inoperative since getting the work done? Any help as to where i should go with this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mike

I fitted my own L/R tank and didnt have ANY problems.
The only thing that happened was that the tank showed full until it dropped below the capacity of the original as I didnt alter the float at all.
OriginallyI did but it stuck on the side of the tank so reshaped it to original and had no more trouble.
You dont really need to know how full a tank is only how empty. Maybe he conneced the wires from the tank up incorrectly. However I dont see the mattering as the two tanks on those operate seperately.

It ran on the main all the way home as the sub was empty and I'd noticed a fuel drop from shop to home, the problem being is that it seems i cant change to the sub from the main rendering it useless

On reflection it could be a wiring issue as there must be a connection somehow as if you try and turn on the subtank when the main is full it wont do it so there must be a cutout in the float assembly.
Easy way to check is lift the floor mat and take out the cover and after marking the wires disconnect them and then try the sub tank switch.
Reconnect them one at a time till you can see if thats where the fault is.
Other way is look at a wiring diagram.

Next thing for me to do is use the spellchecker by the look of above post

An even easier way is get an identical model and look at the wiring in it and take it that its corerct and if yours is different change it to match and see what happens

Mike GU,
Try disconnecting the main battery for a couple of minuets then reconnect this should reset the computer.

How fulls the main now?
It may that until it drops below 3/4 before it starts pumping into the main.

Mike I get 400ks out of my main tank before the gauge gets to the three quarter mark, from memory mine wont pump fuel across from the sub into the main for the first 200+ Ks when its full. There is a sensor on the main tank fuel sender that turns the power to sub tank pump on & off depending on the height of fuel in the main. Hope this helps???

Cheers Steve.

Hi Mike,

GU Patrol's have a history of sub tank gauge issues relating to poor earthing - a design issue. It is quite likely that the earthing to tank sender assembly has been mucked up during the change. I think car is earthed to body, not chassis, but tank is earthed via chassis due mounting. The body and chassis not well earthed.

Problem seems to be fixed by fitted secondary earthing strap from body to chassis. Refer attached photo (under sill LHS front door).

Regards,
Hugh

The light on the switch should operate when the switch is pressed & the pump is operating but the light on the dash is a malfunction warning light & only comes on if there is a problem

It sounds to me like you have fixed the problem & it is now working correctly

When you say you will know when you are on the sub tank do you realise that when you press the switch it is not drawing fuel from the sub to the engine but it is pumping fuel from the sub to the main

The main has 1/4 in it and the sub is now full, i filled it before i disconnected the battery because it was empty and i was not sure if I'd make it home after picking it up. The light on the instrument cluster should still be illuminated when the sub button is pressed right? Weather the sub has fuel or not?

The light on the cluster only illuminates if there is a problem with the sub tank transfer system

If you turn the engine on now & press the sub tank switch the light on the switch should come on & after a period of time you should see the sub tank guage dropping & the main tank guage coming up as it pumps fuel from the sub to the main

Its just that before i had the LR fitted the sub tank light on the dash would light up as well as the switch and still pump into the main, well if you think i have fixed the problem ill go with that, we leave in 5 weeks for the Anne Beadell and the car has to be tip top, thank you for all your help everyone!!

I'm sure there will be another problem post coming from me!!

With the main at 1/4,sub tank full, engine running and the pump switched on, open the fuel cap and have a look down the filler neck, you should be able to see fuel flowing if all is working as it should be.
