No- this is not a post for brand bashing, but, I was trawling through the Forum last night (looking for a particular post).
I noticed from past posts that Nissans seem to have a dis-proportionate number of mechanical and technical problems.
With engines blowing up, chassis cracking, wheels falling off, turbos failing, electrical problems etc. etc.
Maybe cos there's more Nissans?? Nope- a quick check of the Members Rig list doesn't indicate this !!
Maybe cos Nissan drivers give their vehicle a hard time?? Dunno about that !!
This is just an observation- and not based on any definite data !!

Signman

Some thoughts on your observation

1. After the Renault take over of a major stakehold in Nissan, and its influence over the company, it does appear that the marque has been weakened by new engineering techniques.

2. Nissan owners are more adventurous and more willing to share some of their misfortune experiences with the world, than Toyota owners, who, may hang their heads in shame, should there be an issue, and I quote from advertisements, 'the best four wheel drive in the world'(Luckily early Toyota build faults have been forgotten).

It would seem that the more vocal people on this forum, apart from yourself, are Nissan owners. The latter must dare to be different!..lol

Hi Hairy - Our 3 ltr Nissan is great; no mechanical issues whatsoever. The Landcruiser is the one that blew the head (and previously did in a gearbox - common with Landcruisers that do a bit if work)

Have you ever thought that maybe the drivers of "other" brands don't post on here when their so-called superior vehicles break down?

In the 5 years that I have been involved in 4WD'ing, the amount of breakage/damage/carnage that I have personally witnessed happen to other brands has far outweighed the damage that I have personally witnessed to Nissans, with the exception of competitions. (I was involved in a local run winch challenge event here on the Coast a few years back, probably 9 out of 10 trucks were Nissans)

I can count (and name if I had to LOL...) at least 5 diffs that went bang on another brand of vehicle in the last 2 years! How many Nissans? Nil. In our club there are many more Nissans than other brands, the only damage that comes to mind is a set of after market (AVM) hubs in a GU that went bang.... the owner went back to standard manual hubs and hasn't broke them since, if you knew the guy you would realize how strong they must be... LOL.....

I've had 2 tojos (60 and 80) and have never seen a chassis broken on either of these models in all the club trips we have done in the top end in the last 20 years.
Seen tojo breakdowns, normally wheel bearings (generally lack of maintenance) diesel fuel pump (1 off) and some minor stuff like battery carriers coming loose on corrigations, so generally I think most Tojo owners are happy with the reliability of thier trucks.
Hell my 80 series has been so overloaded on some of our extended trips (Gregory for two weeks, Cape for 6 weeks etc) that it scares me, but it hasn't broken down so what else can I say "Toyotas are tough".

I think everyone would agree that Toyota would be more reliable overall than Nissan however you pay more for a Toyota. Nissan would be more reliable than a Holden or Rangie for example etc etc. I know plenty of people with Nissans who have had no issues, I think some of Nissan's issues have been isolated cases or hickups if you like. If I were going around Australia and my life depended on it I would take a Toyota and I think the numbers of Toyota's used for this type of travel would easily substantiate this.
IMHO...

All jokes aside I drive a Toyota because they make a better vehicle which also happens to more expensive. If there was no such thing as a Toyota I would drive a Nissan.. IMHO..!

Toyota make a better product, no doubting it, thats why you see more of them in the outback than a Nissan or other vehicle.

You cannot dispute this fact, you cannot disagree with it either, it is simply fact.

I only deal in facts and thats why I drive a Toyota.! LOL

OK, I reckon a 200 series is a great vehicle (Da... obvious, I bought one!). But lets just look at the key - oh, sorry it doesn't have one. Thats right, you carry a proximity switch and when you are within 1m of the vehicle, and on the outside, you unlock the door by pulling the handle.

But first the door handle proximity sensor must register that your hand has touched the handle. So to simply unlock the door the 200 series has 10 (yes ten) sensors to read the location of the proximity switch (it knows if you are inside or outside the vehicle) and then it has 5 (yes five) proximity sensors to read if your hand has touched the door handle. Only then will it unlock. And now you have to start the vehicle. Push the start button and ... nothing! Oh, dear, I forgot to have my foot on the brake while touching the start button so no go. Now what happens if the brake switch fails!!!

So how reliable do you think this will be in 5 years time. Give me a key anyday, I can bypass that if I need too and do you think you will be able to bypass this in the bush??? And this is for the BASE model (GXL - no lower model available!!!)

And all that is to start the vehicle. And when you do, there is a quick tug on the steering wheel (don't know why, but it turns ~2 degrees), the brake pedal moves (electrically!) and the seatbelt tightens a tad. Hmm. I am an engineer dealing with PLC's regularly and all this scares me.

Give me a GU 4.2TD if you want to talk about reliability. Nothing is 100% reliable but if you can find anything more reliable than the GU 4.2TD then go for it. But if you want the ultimate in comfort, power, economy etc... then start looking at the 200. All about horses for courses.

But hey, any vehicle breakdown is only a Satphone and GPS co-ordinate away from recovery - not like the old days when it was life and death!!!

Cheers

I'm not sure I would like the keyless entry either but I might get used to it and I wouldn't assume it's not going to be reliable in 5 years.? Having said that I also think you are asking for trouble with all the extra bells and whistles and sensors etc etc.

And yes you are correct Captain on the GU 4.2TD, great vehicle but so was the 80 series diesel and the Troop Carriers etc etc. In todays age with Sat Phones you can be prepared, but a broken vehicle whilst you are away shouldn't kill you but your missus will..!

At Saturday Soccer we turned up in my misses's Kluger with this system to become aware of the drama of another family who had manged to lock both sets of car and house keys into a brand new $100K plus X5. Tow truck to the dealer/glazier apparently. Can't happen with the Kluger, it won't lock wih a key inside.

Is this true Shane..? Captain hid the fact he owned a 3ltr patrol and obviously dumped it for the new 200 series cruiser..! Frickin Hell Capatin, you duped me big time.! I feel used and abused..!

So the Captain jumps ship big time from Nissan to Toyota but stands by his old Nissan (At least in his memories).

Hi Shane,

I think my support for the 3.0TD is on record here, but just to recap - "the series III onwards GU 3.0TD are proving to be very reliable and are arguably the best value for money large 4WD on the AUS market".

Main reason I didn't buy another was the absolute crap service by Nissan Australia. My dealer was great (for a stealer!) but Nissan Australia do nothing to support their dealers or their customers. I recently bought my wife a new Mazda CX7 and point blank refused to even look at a Nissan purely because of Nissan Australia's attitude to customers. Their attitude cost them over $120K worth of potential sales from me and until they start to look after their customers they will continue to lose market share - price will only help you for so long.

Cheers

Ahh...TerraFirma, well at least you got one bit right, I have no brand loyalty!!! I had my 3.0TD for almost 5 years and I could have easily been tempted into another - its a great vehicle!!! Looks like some non-owners are nervous of just how good it is so want to keep knocking it to justify buying something more expensive.

Me, I am lucky enough to be able to buy what I want. When I sold my 80 series I went the GU 3.0TD over an IFS 4.2TD cruiser and have never regretted that decision. Just because I now have a 200 doesn't reflect on the 3.0TD, I nearly got a D..Di...Dis..Disc...nah, just couldn't go that far :)

Ahh...Captain, I completely understand.! As I said if there was no such thing as a Toyota I would be driving a Nissan. I simply can't put the Nissan ahead of the Toyota for so many reasons. My wifes 3rd Cruiser and Toyota head office have been fantastic. (Master Brake Cylinder went 4 years old, 1 year outta warranty, now these things are seriously expensive). Toyota covered the cost completely, saved me $3-4k. Outside of this I have had no issues other than stupid dealers who always need careful care.

Hope you enjoy the 200 series, on my shopping list right now..! Take care...!

Don't be silly Signman it's an outright brand bash - But to be honest, Nissans do have their good points - great to drive in town, they come in automatic, nice range of colours, even the girls can drive them without rolling them over and they are cheap.

I own a 2008 model V8 Troopy, it only comes in manual, and I must admit its a bit like driving a truck.

Based on my personal experience, friends, family, club etc, the most common serious issue I've come across out bush has been Toyo diff's going, period.

Later 100 series suspension problems are well documented. Early new-gen. v8 diesel Toyo problems had a bit of an airing here - haven't heard much since thankfully.

I dont think it's right to talk about chassis cracking when recent well aired case with Roachie involves a highly modified vehicle with twin 315's hanging off the very back. Rear spring housing prob's always seem to involve non-standard suspension too. I think all of us fairly serious off-roaders risk fatigue issues.

Our Patrol has been brilliant, but I keep weight down, keep mod's limited etc. And maybe it cos there's more Toyo's out there, but I keep having to snatch Toyo's out bush as per my recent trip, when we never have a problem travelling the same route (touch wood).

From personal experience (my company cars have all been toyo) Toyo after sales service far far better than Nissan, and despite above issues, that alone will probably swing decision on my next car .

He he he, this is fun boys, just like the old days!! LMAO

I've got as much brand loyalty as The Captain and currently have both a Patrol "grenade" (apparently with a long fuse) and a 100 TD. Both excellent vehicles.

Just did a 9,000K Cape trip in the Patrol and had some drama's with aftermarket airbags (another story) that necessitated a trip to the most in-demand mechanic in Australia at this time of year. We had a chat about what comes in, common problems etc and he must be another lone ranger. For the record, apparently most problems by far up at the tip are trailers. The only problems I personally saw on this trip were a new Hilux that broke a ball joint on the way into Vrilya Point and an 80 series with some chassis cracks having to be welded up.

The missus chatted to a few of the wives over the washing machines and there seemed to be a few people "waiting for parts" but I don't have any more data than that, she's "non technical".

Thinking about it a bit more, 20-25 years ago if you purchased a new 4by you could immediately load up and go.
These days, as soon as you drive out the show room, the vehicle needs a total upgrade to perform the same task.

Somewhere along the line the manufacturers seem to have veered more towards making sedans that happen to be 4wd's and the more technology [sometimes frivelious] they pump in means more potential problems ahead.

There was a time when the driver was in charge of the vehicle, now it seems its become the other way round.

Just my thoughts.......Lionel.

I think it's probably more that there is more choice nowdays and the vehicles offer more choice for the purpose of 4WDing. You can still buy vehicles off the floor that will do the task such as Troopy's, Defenders, Patrol Cab Chassis but they don't make good all rounders. Years back that was pretty much all you could get. Unfortunately the generation of vehicles that showed us that you could have a good all rounder (like the GQ and 80) have gone softer and the later generations of similar vehicles need modification to do the same job.

Yes and the great trade in valuation we got for the Navara, we had
it for 18 months, I was putting to many kilometres on it, and the
Cook wanted an Auto, so she can share the driving when we travel,
so it was good business sense to trade it while it was fairly new,
the only down side is I am using her old Exploder, its done only
70ks in 6 years, and you cant get good dollars for it as a trade in, so I
will drive it into the ground.

more grunt, than all the Tojos and Nis-cans put to gether, thats
power to weight ratio, but yes sadly it has a Blue Oval on the back
Tail Gate, and since Dicky Johnson got the chop from that Ford Mob,
I feel ashamed to Advertise Ford, I better wash my mouth out.

Cheers
Daza
