I've tried a search and can't come up with much...

I'm in the market for a new 4x4 and I'm looking at the Tdi Disco and the 2.8L pajero diesels. I had a '95 Disco tdi for a couple of years which was great in the Kimberley and then died in a big way when I moved to Vic. I'm familiar with their intricacies and know that getting one may be a nightmare but looking back on it, the problems I had with mine were probably related to my maintenance of it.

Anyway, how does it stack up to the Paj? Is the pajero have independant suspension on the front? Off road ability is important, as is fuel efficiency. Comfort etc is not so important. Is it possible that the Pajero might have as many issues as the disco?

I like to think that if I get a log booked disco, with a new timing belt kit, and I maintain it meticulously then I should be alright...

Ta.

$16k sounds very cheap for a TD5 with VERY low kms and extras. Would have thought $19-20k for that.

Poida...all my mates who have pajero's....both petrol and diesel are very happy with them...it's like all vehicles...you have got to know their limitations and don't push them too far...that's all....not aware of any issues with them....one mate is a former disco owner and another a former nissan patrol owner..the other two used to drive rodeo's, one one still does...but all love their pajy's.

Presume you mean new to yourself not new from the show room floor ?? The only thing I can comment on that I have heard is the 2.8 D pajeros like to blow head gaskets. Lady at my work HAD one and did three heads traded it in on the third time. Yes it was very well serviced and didnt tow with it used it to transport her show dogs around. Wether it was just a lemon of a car ?? possible but I have heard it from other owners. There is a member on here that has one red in colour, cant remember there user name but he might be able to fill you in more if he reads your thread. Regards Steve M

Goodday Steve,
In the dog and lemon guide they state they have been known to start running on their own oil, but I have never struck anybody this has happened to.
Swmbo went with out air last summer because I thought the compressor was stuffed in her Paj. I paid the mechanic down the road to service it and give it a check over. Discovered the noise was only the tensioner bearing, so although I done her a favour I am still in the shxt. lol
Cheers pete

Thanks guys. I think I'm swaying towards the pajero, I'm just not sure if I can put enough faith in a Disco again.

Shame though, they're pretty good when they work...

There are a "few" 2.8 Paj's that have done head gaskets but I'm pretty sure that would make up a low %.
They're bloody hard to find which probably says more about what the owners think than anything else.
My Pajero has got me everywhere I have ever wanted to go without fuss and I have no plans on selling it anytime soon.
Be patient with the search and Good luck

Cheers
Paul
