1994 hilux intercooler help

Hi people,here is the run down, i have a 94 dc 2.8td lux with the overheating problem, what i intending on doing is putting on a two and a half inch free flowing exhaust system too hopefully get rid of some heat build up and a intercooler, what i would like too know is anyone who knows of/had this problem alleviated this problem or am i just wasting cash and if they have any pics of the job at hand as there isnt much room in the bay , was looking at fitting the intercooler without increasing fuel just tryning too have cooler in going in,i have done just about everything else but i did come across something about the glycol content in certain brand coolants not being as high as the toyota brand so i am gonna change that as
well too see if any thing happens ? any help appreciated

First off check that the coolant instrument sender and guage are working and reading correctly. Do you have an actual over heating problem or is it an indication problem?
Clean up all the earths in the engine bay, on the engine and chassis and see if that makes a difference.
Is the fuel pump over fuelling? Too much fuel = smoke and high engine temps.
When was the last time the injectors and pump were serviced?
It may help to have the radiator and block flushed professionally and / or the top and bottom radiator tanks removed and see if the core is blocked. A pressure check would also be advised ( not holding pressure = coolant boiling at lower temp)
Change the thermostat and coolant and radiator cap.
Change the top and bottom radiator hoses.
It might also pay to pull the
water pump out and see if the impeller has any vanes left on it.
Give the oil system a good cleaning out with one of the oil system cleaners available, change the oil and filter.
The 2.5 inch will make a bit of a difference to performance especially if you get the pump tuned to it, the same with the intercooler, Im not sure if either will help with the heat. But it will be a nicer truck to drive, it might even nearly keep up with a Rodeo :).

Yeh it likes too overheat in summer, which isnt really good mainly driving up hills, a/c on towing a trailer, what can be done too the fuel pump if its taken off and serviced can it be adjusted internally to a turbo requirement or is it mainly just be adjusting the fueling screw on the outside?i have practically done everything else, im hoping i can get the right answer before i decide to get rid of it, i have been told recently that the
water galleries for the 2.8s arent the best flowing design either

If the injectors haven't been serviced in 100k km that would be a good place to start.
Find a diesel mechanics with a dyno and get it checked out there. They can load it up on the dyno and see what's happening with fuel- air ratios and exhaust gas temps. Diesels run hot when running rich.
The fan check mentioned in the other post is worth a go.
Does it have a bull bar with large
driving lights in front of the radiator? Try taking them off and see if that makes a difference.
If all of the above checks out ok a larger radiator might be an option.

Another thing to check is the viscous coupling for the cooling fan. These stuff up and dont lock in or do so partly. You will hear people say they dont need to lock in when cruising along, thats bull sh#t, If the air passing through the radiator is hot enough and the viscous coupling is working like it should it will lock in the fan to pull the air through the radiator so it cools instead of free wheeling. They are a bit hard to hear over the clatter of the 2.8D. I replaced
mine as it wasnt locking in totally. They are expensive from Toyota but I was warned not to use any thing else even Davis Craig ones as the bloke at the spare parts
shop said he was getting them coming back. Regards Steve M
