Tony
Hi just wondered if anyone has been to Alice Springs/ Uluru in April. we have been so stuck for what time of year to go. the general feedback seems to be July but we would be early july late June ( school hols) and i dont know if we really want to experience the possible freezing nights continuosly.
Ive heard that the weather in April is similar to August, warm days and nice nights. Any opinions on this time of year
The main concern for us with April is will it be too hot ( ie above 35 deg) and how are the Flies. we are taking a softfloor camper, 2 small children and eat most of the time outside. if the flies are shocking then which is worse...flies or sub zero nights
any help regarding flies and weather in April will be really appreciated
Cheers Tony

Yep went there in April 1978 and a few times since, weather was great, can't remember about flies but they vary from year to year depending on summer rains etc, ie more rain = more feed for cattle = more cattle poop = more flies.

Also should have mentioned last trip that way was June 2006 and we had one night of minus 7 deg C, properly cold.

G'day Tony
Can't comment on Alice in April but re your comment ..
"if the flies are shocking then which is worse...flies or sub zero nights"
I'll take freezing nights any time. You can always rug up and if you're in a position to have a fire so much the better. Good warm sleeping gear means no problems sleeping at night. We recently did a trip where we had more negative nights than positive and I loved it.
But when the flies are really bad then it's not good. IMHO fly nets are a PITA. Some people travel with one of those mesh tent thingys to eat in but I reckon that's a PITA too - more crap to set up and take down (probably OK if staying in one place).
Need to be careful too with flies and littlies because the flies can carry eye diseases - I recall our daughter had problems in Alice many years ago.
Cheers from the Moose.

Thanks Moose, didnt think about eye diseases. ive heard they try to get into your eyes etc. We love a good campfire but im not sure if Ayers Rock Resort and Kings Canyon Resort allow campfires, still waiting on a reply from them. they dont mention anything on their website.
Cheers Tony

If your into
camping and fires you would probably be better off staying at Curtain Springs.

Lived here in Alice for ten years,
Darwin 30. Regards to Flies, Big Mobs in April and still warm but not Stinkin Hot. Late May, early June is good time For
camping . Generally if we get a couple of frosts ,it will kill the flies, so the cold weather is good. Hairy might have an opinion to.

G'day Tony, we were there early April last year & temp was fine,
around 30 I think, nights werent cold, not if you live in southern NSW anyway. Flies werent an issue, but ,as others have said, may
vary with season. 45 in the Bungles was warm enough a few days
later. We were in a soft floored C/t & slept under a sheet only
around Alice..on top of it further out.......oldbaz.

in reply to your question this is the best time it is the busiest time for that reason. the sunsets are better the flies are less and the days more comfortable. the nights are cold but after doing tours through the centre for about 5 years and all those being swag tours if you just have a good -10 sleeping bag it wont be a worry. just wear more but the days are still sunny and a lot more bearable

You cannot have a campfire on your site at either
Yulara campground or Kings Canyon.
