The will be my first 4x4 holiday and I was just wondering would the border track be a good place to start. Bit about my self and the car Ive driven on the beach a couple of time (never let a city person drive on the beach who has never been 4x4. found out a couple of day ago.) The Ute is a Hilux 2.8D.The Owners before me took it to the Cape and did the Cannins stock route and Fraizer island. Its got the auto. lokkers in the fount and rear 130l diesel tank 100l water tank 2 spare wheels draws and a fridge. Getting new tyres for it before i go too they tyre dealer said BFG's are the way to go for the price and km u get out of them still have split rims so only can go 225.

1 question will me and a friend be able to do it
2 will i need to take extra diesel in cans
3 when will be the best time (cant go in holidays) we where thinking of late jan. at the end of them
4 could we take a bike rack a rear toe ball sort on the trip we like to ride a fare bit. is it suitable for mtb rideing
5 would a stock hilux 3.0td do it (they said they where keen Depends on the $$$$$) the only thing it has is mud tyres on. It's a duel cab too if that makes a differce?? little experance as well in 4x4.
6 do u need a couple of weeks of food just in case something happens.
7 will i have enough water for 5 plp if the others come.
8 am i kidding my self ??? or is it just a dream ???

Its not that hard Unko, espically now that you can't drive it in Summer.

Tracks is closed from Nov 1 to about April.

No need extra fuel or food or water (presume you would carry a few liters at least).

Think I did it in 3 hrs last time (Afternoon tea to dusk).

Mostly no phone coverage. With good NextG setup I got it once or twice.

Standard lux can do, just need to use around 16psi in tyres,
but carry snatch gear

Hi Krakka

The main part from, Scorpian springs , right thru the harder one way section to the end past Red Bluff and to Blue hills rd is only about 75km.

We regularly , on our return from say Simpson etc , just do it as a diversion .

Averaging 25km/hr is much same as driving other desserts.

Border Track between Pinnaroo and Bordertown is closed from Oct to April.
Outside of those times i would be comfortable taking a standard 4x4 totally on my own with 4 days food and 40litres of water....
It can almost be a day trip now with the track being easy..
Let your tyres down in the sand to 15psi...

The harder part of it (near the lower end) is one way North to south, but there is another easy track running south north to bypass this bit.
Its just bumpy and rough north of Pinnaroo.

The Border Track (from Pinnaroo towards Bordertown in Ngarkat Conservation Park) is pretty easy driving in my opinion. Once you get off the main road near the border heading south it is two way until the gate and turnoff to Scorpion Spring. From there it is one way - south - all the way. Don't drive through the deep mud holes if you want to avoid damaging your car with submerged sticks, etc. And it also stuffs the track up.

Part way along there is a big sandhill. I found it a little difficult 1st time but its actually quite easy in low range. Let your tyres down to about 20 psi for starters. When driving on the track it is (was) quite rutted. I found the best approach to be arms in, windows up and a loose grip on the wheel. The car steered itself to a great extent.

Then you can take a diversion into Big Desert Wilderness Area in Victoria. I saw the biggest snake ever in there - its length was across the entire track. You can also head south further and camp at Red Bluff. From the Red Bluff turnoff the track was pretty non-existent when I was there last.

1. Yes, you and a friend easily will do it
2. You won't need extra fuel as you can get diesel in Pinnaroo
3. I think spring is the best although any time out in the bush is great.
4. Its not really that suitable for bike riding as its mainly sand tracks
5. Stock Hilux will do it. My 4.2D non turbo DX Patrol did it and my 2.8D non turbo 4Runner also did it with ease. If the muddies are used on the road I suppose they are OK for the sand. Dunno, never had muddies
6. No need to carry extra food as there are towns nearby.
7. 100L water should be more than plenty
8. Neither, it’s a good trip. We did it as an overnighter from home (near Adelaide), staying at Keith and then heading to the Coorong for a spot of fishing before arriving home on Sunday night.

Make sure you have the appropriate recovery gear and learn how to use it before you need to use it. Snatch strap, jacking plate, compressor, shackles, etc.

Enjoy the trip - this is a very affordable trek. From Victor, to Pinnaroo and return you probably want to stay overnight somewhere just to make the trip enjoyable. The northern part, though I have not done it, is completely different from what I understand.

Unko, there also many tracks that run off the Boredr Track. If you are travelling from Nhill, where do you plan to enter the Border Track? A lot more to see and do than just the Border Track.
