The
Border Track (from
Pinnaroo towards Bordertown in
Ngarkat Conservation Park) is pretty easy driving in my opinion. Once you get off the main road near the border heading south it is two way until the
gate and turnoff to Scorpion Spring. From there it is one way - south - all the way. Don't drive through the deep mud holes if you want to avoid damaging your car with submerged sticks, etc. And it also stuffs the track up.
Part way along there is a big sandhill. I found it a little difficult 1st time but its actually quite easy in low range. Let your tyres down to about 20 psi for starters. When driving on the track it is (was) quite rutted. I found the best approach to be arms in, windows up and a loose grip on the wheel. The car steered itself to a great extent.
Then you can take a diversion into
Big Desert Wilderness Area in Victoria. I saw the biggest snake ever in there - its length was across the entire track. You can also head south further and
camp at
Red Bluff. From the
Red Bluff turnoff the track was pretty non-existent when I was there last.
1. Yes, you and a friend easily will do it
2. You won't need extra fuel as you can get diesel in
Pinnaroo
3. I think spring is the best although any time out in the bush is great.
4. Its not really that suitable for bike riding as its mainly sand tracks
5. Stock Hilux will do it. My 4.2D non turbo DX Patrol did it and my 2.8D non turbo 4Runner also did it with ease. If the muddies are used on the road I suppose they are OK for the sand. Dunno, never had muddies
6. No need to carry extra food as there are towns nearby.
7. 100L
water should be more than plenty
8. Neither, it’s a good trip. We did it as an overnighter from home (near
Adelaide), staying at Keith and then heading to the Coorong for a spot of fishing before arriving home on Sunday night.
Make sure you have the appropriate recovery gear and learn how to use it before you need to use it. Snatch strap, jacking plate, compressor, shackles, etc.
Enjoy the trip - this is a very affordable trek. From Victor, to
Pinnaroo and return you probably want to stay overnight somewhere just to make the trip enjoyable. The northern part, though I have not done it, is completely different from what I understand.
