G'day all, I would like some advise on what type or brand budget GPS system (new or used) I could buy to add to my old laptop &/or my next G Nokia N95 phone, or should I buy a hand held? I already have an old Garmin map 175, but I don't think it can be updated, I have had it for about 10 years, it only gives you your position without detailed maps, thanks, Dingo

If it's just for a laptop , get one of those cheap little button type GPS units that sit on the dashboard . They only cost about $100-120 and work a treat . They are powered through the USB cable from the computer . See GPSOZ site .
Willie .

PS , You need software on your computer to use what the GPS provides . Most people use Oziexplorer .

Just brought a GPS Mouse Reciever, sits on dashboard or you can put in on your roof or roofrack, from Johnny Appleseed GPS for $98 dollars (plus Postage) total $105.

Took 5 minutes to load on laptop and I am using Ozexplore software.

Works a treat.

If I bought a new Oziexplorer pack from our shop does it also come with a street navigator?

Ozi does not do Turn by Turn or text to speech navigation

there are dozens of different types of receivers in which you can look at

Looking through a catalog with 2599 receivers won't give you an answer either

If you want a GPSr which can load maps and give you turn prompts you could look at the Garmin 60Cx or 76Cx

The Nuvi / Tom Tom range are easy to use and have big screens and also tell you when to turn and maybe what road to turn down but they don't hook up to the laptops that easy

Then there is the Hema Navigator which has lousy turn by turn street mapping but also comes with Ozi Ce loaded with basic Hema maps you can add more maps to it but i think the SD card only holds 2Gb of data, not sure if the 4 Gb card will work.

NavmanS80 can also have OziCe running in the back ground too and it is cheaper than the Hema, I haven't used or seen any of these in action so I don't know that much about them

OztopoV2 is probably the best priced map you can buy with the most information in it. These only wiork with Garmin products

This is all I can think of at this stage, I must get to work now

KennyBWilson,

The Hema Navigator comes with a 2gb SD card that has about 50mb of free space on it. If you want to add more maps to the unit, a larger card is needed. 16gb SD cards have been tested, and used successfully with the Navigator.

Logic Gear XL488/499 will do all this for much less. Also a few other similar brands about as well.

Hi aussiedingo,

Does your Map175 have a port in the back to hook up to your laptop

Your N95 already has a inbuilt GPSr

I would rather buy a handheld reciever then a mouse for the lappy, at least you can still use the GPSr while the laptop is turned off and also record tracklog

Get a new cheap garmin, then u have the 08 aus navigator text to speach and all the whiz bangs. ! then get garmin mapsource.

Download the australian govenments topographical maps for free, from the gov website ! yes they are free ! or go somewhere like shonkymaps (this guy downloaded the entire countries(aus) topo maps and packaged them in a zip, and yes its a free download about 400mb from memory) or pay for oztotpov2 load em into mapsource hook up ur gps and load them into the sd card slot and your away.

Just did 3months on the cape and the maps were invaluable, we paid for camping twice and had many occasions where we had an entire beach to ourselves for a week and longer, and this was in peak season !

You can load Ozi maps into Smartcom.
