Can anybody suggest a brand / model of a hand held UHF that has a lithion-ion battery and a 12 volt ciggy lighter charger available for it .
I wanted to get a GME TX680 , but I rang GME and they said it did not come with a 12 v charger and they did not sell one as an accessory . Bummer .
Thanks ,
Willie .

Hi Doug
Think he is after a UHF CB not a GPS.
There are none I know of with Lithium rechargeable - I use my 065sx with non-rechargeable lithium's instead.

Hi Robin ,
Both GME and Uniden have rechargeable lithion-ion batteries in their up-market UHF. Iknow that the TX680 GME does not come with a 12 volt charger and they do not sell an accessory .
I am having trouble finding out if the Uniden UHO73SX comes with a 12v charger or not . Their website has no phone number , so you can't ring them .
Thanks ,
Willie .

Hi Willie
Don't believe they came with a 12v charger , my UH075 didn't.
Its probably the only real weakness in an otherwise great package.
The charge cradle comes with a transformer step down DC power supply to operate it.
However the battery pack is a low voltage , and I made up a straight thru cable from 12v to the same charge cradle and charge
mine that way.
You should not operate the radio from this cradle though - although I do with
mine when set to low power.

I noted on the site that Doug put the link for below , that there is a 12v power cable ( cig lighter to charger) for the UHO73 /75 / 78 .
That means the the UHO73 takes that , so I might order the unit and that cable .
Thanks ,
Willie

Hi Willy,
Most voltage adaptors for vehicles do not regulate the voltage when set to 12 volts i.e. they just allow the vehicle voltage straight through to the appliance. The reason for this; for a voltage regulator to work you need 2.5 - 3 volts above the required voltage. I believe that this is the reason the chip in my Uniden UHF 075 cradle charger got zapped. I have been looking for a 12 volt regulated supply since receiving my new charge cradle and have not found one.
As much as I hate
inverters I feel that this is the only way to go to keep my hand-held UHF charged. If anyone has found a suitable 12 volt regulator please post the details here.
Good Luck
Doug

Doug ,
You may
well have been speaking Chinese for all the sense that made to me , but I appreciate your trying to help anyway .
There is a 12 cig lighter accessory lead which connects to the charger on the UH073 . I have ordered one . Are you saying that it will not work and will bugger the charger ?
I am a technical cretin , please foregive my ignorance .

Hi Willie,
My name is Doug Not Kevin!
What I am saying is that all the cigarette lighter cables and adaptors that I have seen do not regulate the 12 volt supply. They just allow the full vehicle voltage (which could spike to
well over 14 volts) through to the appliance. I believe that this is why GME and Uniden have not supplied these items in the past. However this could have changed recently.
I would contact your supplier or Uniden directly to find out if the cigarette lighter adaptor is suitable for the transceiver you have purchased. I have telephoned Uniden on a few occasions and once I got someone who knew what they were on about and was very helpful.
I find it amazing these hand-helds are not supplied ready to be recharged from a vehicle after all that is the most likely place that they will be used.
It appears that the Icom unit mentioned in this post may be supplied with a vehicle adaptor and that is the one I would would be looking at.

Thanks Doug ,
But can you go one more answer please .
I intend to use the handheld while prospecting during the day and then leave it on charge with my detector battery overnight .
Will the fact that the car battery is not being charged by the engine , lessen the chance of that spike ruining the "appliance " ?By appliance do you mean it might bugger the charger , the handheld or both ?
I will contact Uniden as you suggest .
Thanks a lot ,
Willie .

Hi Willie,
Should be OK, just remember to disconnect charger before you start the motor. As I mentioned, get a professional opinion from Uniden.

Well , I received my Uniden handheld UHF model uh073sx today .
It is small , with a strong metal case and I ordered a 12 volt cigarette charger cord with it ( this should have been standard ).
The destructions state that you should not attempt to transmit while it is in the charger . Apart from that , there seems to be no warnings about using the 12v car charger .
The battery lasts for 12 hours on low power transmit (of 1W) . 3W transmit is optional and all the knobs and buttons are easy to operate - not like the one I was using on my last trip ,where you had to be a 10 year old computer brat to work it all out .
Very impressive and exactly what I wanted.
Cheers all ,
Willie .
