Will we need to book a

When we were there last year it was first in gets the best spot. We camped in the caravan
park close to the
water. It was quite good.

Hi Derek. It was a very good site and thanks again for the bits of merchandise. That are coming in very handy.
Cheers Phil

Aussie
The only sites which can be pre-booked are the very few powered ones. And I reckon if you haven't booked one of them by now you've got Buckleys!!! Usual procedure is just turn up and if you choose to
camp in the C.P. go where they tell you. Or if you don't want to share their facilities with the other 3-5000 people in the C.P. you can
camp on the banks of the river or in any number of locations outside the town. Being in the C.P. is no guarantee of immediate access to showers or
toilets. When we were there a couple of years ago the queue for the loo was usually at least 20 minutes at any time of the day or night and just a little less for the showers. Other facilities for non C.P. campers are provided on the back of semi-trailers (at a cost) and portaloos strategically placed in popular spots. Please don't get me wrong, we wouldn't have missed it for the world, but the town does struggle to facilitate the crowds.

I just can't understand why people put themselves through this experience, there are just so many other thing to do and see with much less hassle. Each to his own.
B'ville is a great place for repairs and that's about it for us.
Cheers Lyndon

You are only able to book powered sites - telephone (07) 46563214 - there is 30 acres of unpowered
camping in the CP, which only holds about 1800 people now, mainly because more people are bringing camper trailers rather than just swaggin it - therefore taking up more room (much better for everyone to have more space around them) - the most ever in the CP was 2,250. Some of the area down by the
billabong is still very wet from the 3 inches of rain at the June Long Weekend.(The edge of the
billabong is like
camping on your own canal development). If you choose not to be in town at the CP there is the area known as The Common which is 3 kilometres long - goes from the town
grid to the banks of the Diamantina - then over the eastern side is the racecourse. If
camping out on The Common is just means you drive to town through the RBT each time - quite green out there at the moment. There is still some
water in the river but not at the old Causeway now. A great deal depends on which day you get into town - makes a difference to the site you get.
After all it's only for a few days and it's only a matter of making up your mind that you want to experience whatever it is that draws 5000 people to town - be it horses, gambling, dust, howling wind, freezing cold, stinking hot - a great deal of fun and heaps of like minded people. Enjoy yourselves.
