Have a dilemma on our hands. Over the years hard earned cash put in to our little girl means it has all the good things that open end shut. At 300ks the Turbo had a heart attack and died while on the Strz back in April. Managed to tow the van home just. Just come back from a 5000km trip and the turbo is doing weird things and water blows to the over flow bottle and out that way. That started on day two.Bubbling in the radiator suggests a cracked head. We have blown a fortune on injectors and the like in the past year and are trying to work out do we rebuild or put something else in. Even thought of finding out if a cruiser v8 would drop in. We do a lot of off the beaten track stuff and are not interested in changing to much as the bush mechanic has a had time of it. We are ever so interested in any recent up grades to the ever so trusty 80 any one out there has done. She must have a heart of a stallion with those injuries and still get us home. We fed her all the good genuine bits and pieces every 5000ks or there abouts.

If you are happy with it otherwise, give the motor a new head, new radiator, waterpump and freshen up the pistons, bearings, fuel pump etc. It may cost over 5k but what could you trade it on that will be as good for 5k + the 80 (especially if it is broken)

Personally I'd drop in the 4.7 V8 petrol cruiser/ lexus motor

It was a 1HZ with aftermarket turbo. No computers, which was what he wanted.

It should be the same engine as yours.

Hi Old girl,
Bit of a problem because as it is it is not worth anything. If you love her as you obviously do rebuild her. The only other piont I would make I was talking to the car dealer accross the road today and he said petrol 80s are worth about $6000.00 wholesale. Could be a proposition to get a petrol and put it on gas.
Cheers Pete

If the Old Girl is one of the later twin overhead cam turbo diesels then in good condition she is worth up to $28,000. And thats if you can find one.
If yours is the 2 valve then its worth more to you than what you'd get selling it.
Either way its best to keep her!

If it were me, i'd stick with an 80 series as they are the best in my opinion. And the one you know inside and out is even better.
My advice would be to have a reputable engine reconditioner give yours a good freshen up.
Just because you are blowing compression into the water jackets doesnt always mean a cracked head... more common is just a blown head gasket, and since yours is turbo'd and under boost, a blown head gasket would be my guess.
Either way, if you are planning more tours, at least rebuilding the top end (again) would be advisable and knowing she has "only" done 300k kms, is probably all she needs.
Good luck!

Check Toyota for a price on a new crate long engine.
They have specials time to time.
If my lux motor died, I think thats what I would do rather than stuff around.
