A bloke I know has a Mitsu Challenger v6 petrol, 2000 model, he's telling me that for him to disengage 4wd back to 2wd he needs to reverse the car ten - twenty feet!!!! is this correct?? If so that's unbelievable!

There is a procedure that the Auto Hubs sometimes require.
If they fail to disengage the procedure is to reverse the vehicle for a metre or two.
The same procedure is recommended by Nissan in the GUII, not sure about later ones.

With auto locking hubs you normally are required to reverse to disengage the auto hubs in some vehicles, but 20 feet sounds a fair amount. My old Vitara was about 2 feet and the light would go out, the prado I do the same. It would be in the manual anyway but definately sounds extreme to me. I have found in the vitara that the 4wd light on the dash would stay on till I hit reverse and went back and the light would go out indicating to me that it has disengaged. In the prado I can actually go forward or back untill the light goes out. I might be totally wrong but this is what I have been doing no issues so far. This is the placard from the sunvisor on the prado>>>>>>>>

I would have thought that this is an indication of "wind up" probably caused by driving on bitumen in 4wd. If so, he is doing a lot of damage. Does he get the same problem if he drives on loose stuff and then disengages 4wd before going into firm ground?

I have a challenger and sometimes have bit of trouble engaging 4wd but have no probs disengaging. Dont have to reverse. Just an unrelated problem- Have just fitted Bridgestone AT 694s last October and 1 tyre has split on wall and needs replacing. Has anyone else had any probs. Bridgestone dealers says it is impact damage- I have my doubts

Hi ya all,
When i was 18 i saw a toyota hilux trayback come of the 110kay zone at
forrest glen on the beautiful sunny coast,
well let me tell you the front tyres where spinning backwards as the rear
wheels where driving forwards, oh the noise was like you had locked up two cars at the same time, pretty much like a banshee screaming and moaning.
well the hilux owner stopped the car took it out of 4wd and drove off to home with an accellerated heart rate!!!
my heart was double pumping the red stuff and my pants was almost fullish as
well!!!!
theres my experience with diff wind up!
have fun on the dirty stuff

Thanks for your response fellers. I sat in the vehicle with this bloke and got him to engage and disengage 4wd on the dirt and the indicator light came on and off as appropriate. I said "see it OK but he insisted it needed to be driven in reverse... Anyway I thought he was a bit thick so he can keepdoing it as far as i'm concerned. I hate it when people dont want to listen to common sense.
See you all down the track

I have a 2001 Challenger and experience exactly the same after driving on gravel/dirt/rocks for any period of time. Strong smell of oil and I then need to reverse to disengage. My mechanic has looked at the car and sees no problem.
