Well I'd pretty much decided not to go for a disco and then I found a great one that is a really good price. So I got it looked at and in the meantime, found another one which is also really nice. Let me tell you what they are...

'94 Disco, 200tdi 270,000kms. 2" suspension lift. Koni's, 32' Maxxis bighorns + 4 spare maxxis ATs, Snorkel, roo bar, reece hitch f+r. Recond g/box, new clutch, new rad, brakes, serviced every 5000ks.

$5500. It's in WA, where my Mum lives and where I have to go in November so she can have it til then. My Uncle checked it out and reckons its great.

Then I found:

'93 Disco 200tdi 3door. 137,000kms, one owner. Maxidrive low range crawler gears with defender high range transfer gears.
Rear Kaymar bar with wheel and jerry can carriers.
Front and rear ARB diff locks with air compressor.
Winch bar with 9000 lb X9 Superwinch and driving lights.
Sill tanks, giving a capacity of 180 litres.
Aftermarket suspension with polyair bags.
UHF cb radio.
Dual battery.
Snorkel.
Cargo barrier.
Aftermarket performance intercooler and injection pump mods.
Boost and EGT gauges.
Water Tank.
Oil lubed wheel bearings.
CAV fuel filter.
Finer air filter.
Front diff protector and protection plate.
Rear work light.
Rear power outlets.

$7800

Both owned by landrover enthusiasts...

Seems like a no brainer really. The 2nd one on paper is awesome. But it's been pretty modified. It was built purely for 4x4ing and that's what it's done. My gut says the stocky cheaper one might suit me better. But Diff locks! Long range tanks!

I'm moving to Darwin and want something that I'm not under all the time. Hmmm...

What would you do?

I would buy my stock as a rock never been offroad 2 owner GQ 4.2 diesel with 300K on it for $8000.00 LOL!! Semi-serious actually.

To me, even the 94 with Bighorns, means the owner has been serious with those tyres and without the extras like crawler gears and lockers ect he (or she) has had to drive it a bit harder than the owner of the fully kitted 93 model to get to similar places. So to me it would be the 93 model if they were the only two vehicles left on the planet.

Mate i would be very carefull!!. The 200tdi was a great motor, but they can now be a pain to source various parts ! especially heads , Mate this is a great site, but do your self a big favour and ask all questions at AULRO landrover site, its just rovers and thats it!

Well then don't let all the shiny bolt on assessories & cheap price cloud your judgement & reasons for not wanting to buy the car in the first place ;-)

Yeah

I wouldn't lie under either of them as the oil leaks will drip all over your nice clothes

That 2nd one....137,000km in 15 years? Suppose it could have been up on the hoist for most of that time. Still, with all those accessories its hardly a Disco any longer.

Me? I wouldn't buy either. For the same sort of money you could buy a Tojo or a Nissan of similar vintage, both being very robust vehicles

Willem my wife has a 93 nh paj that has now done the grand total of 93000ks. Previous owner used public transport to get to work, and only used on weekends. Damm thing will rust away before she wears it out. lol

Do you really need a four wheel drive - or just want one? If you want something that your not under all the time, consider a motorbike.

We have had 2 Landies and belong to Landie clubs so we know a bit about them. In general, IF you get a good one, you are lucky and will have many KM of happy motoring - HOWEVER, if you get a bad one, your life will be a misery with heaps of heart break and an empty wallet due to the repairs to keep it going.

We have had both and the heart break one, we bought new and once it was out of warranty, it got sold as we could not afford to keep on repairing it.

I have also had many years of owning and driving modified vehicles - forget it, they are a liability in the long run and go for the standard vehicle if you go the Landie or any other vehicle way and you will have a lot less problems.

As previously suggested, go the Jappa way if you want reliability.
