Nuccaleena Cottage and Moolooloo Shearers Quarters
Hello,
We're looking into purchasing a car fridge and we are having trouble choosing a brand as everyone we've spoken to has a different opinion! We're looking in to getting either a WAECO or an Engel. We have heard the Waeco is a bit cheaper but are we getting what we pay for quality wise?
Does anyone out there recommend a specific one and if so, why?
Thanks for your help!
Lisa

I have a 20 year old Engel that works perfect, I have a 1 year old Evakool that works perfect, But if I could fit one in my camper I would go for Trail Blazer no questions asked.
Cheers Steve.

Lisa I have only used my Waeco once and snapped the catch on it . They are cheaply made , but I guess you get what you pay for .
Use less power , buy a eutectic fridge like an Autofridge . Use less power and built like a brick out house.

hi, we have not long ago went through the same problem and did a LOT of looking and asking around.
we were told by a couple different
places that sold both that the new Engel isn't a patch on the older ones and do have trouble with the materials being thinner and they have had them come back with rusting out in about a years time of being bought, but they said "if you can find an older type one to grab it with both hands and never let go", we ended up buying a Waeco and are very pleased, i must admit the first one we bought was faulty as the motor never switched off but after a phone call a replacement was sent to a Waeco distributer that was local to us instead of us having to drive 2 hours to get to were we bought ours from, no questions asked.
i did notice at the caravan and
camping show on Friday Waeco are doing a deal with all compressor fridges and giving away an expensive food sealer/vacuumer with them. which quite annoyed us as we bought our Waeco at the last show so missed out and bought the food vacuum sealer at this show. Engel too had extras with their fridges but couldn't tell you what they were.
Chris.

You could always have a go at the EVAKool. I've had one of their 50 litre models for 8 years and never missed a beat. It's been shaken up on most of the tough Tracks. and never missed a beat.
Rang a service agent a while back and asked if he would service it for me. He said they don't need anything done if it's still working don't touch it.

Lisa,
I have had a engel 39litre fridge for 16yrs. It has been all over Australia in that time. Be it 240v or 12v, in car or siting on a river some where in NT hooked to a deep cycle battery it has performed faultlessly, and it does not get VIP treatment.

No when you ask a question about fridges it seems to close to everyones heart.......you may think the European soccer supporters are aggressive
well hate to tell you you haven't seen nothing yet!
Any of the main brands are good, we use Waeco's (7 of them) and haven't had a problem, Engle, Waeco, Evakool, National Luna, ARB and the list goes on are all good as each other and some are better at somethings and worse at other things.
regards Richard

Giday Lisa,
I tried to open your web page but it appears to be not working.
We enjoyed the PAR and scenery through Moolooloo last year.

Thanks Lisa,
All the links are working OK now!
And very nice they are too.
We walked through the area with Rex Ellis on a Camel Trek last September. and we will revisit it in our vehicle (easier on the backside)

I would go either a Waeco or Engel !!!!!!
Look at em both and decide which suits you the most.......footprint.....what and how you put things in it.......weight?? do you need to take it out or will it be left in??
If I had to choose again then a Waeco would still be my choice ( I own one ) for the use it gets in the back of the 4x4.....storage capacity and weight for putting it in and out ...
But if it was going to be permanately mounted ( say in ther back of a ute ) then it would be a Trailblazer ( cause they are a fair dinkum strong aussie made fridge )

Before recomending a specific fridge what size do you need/want, what space do you have, where is it to be used & how often?
Cheers Craig.........

Hi mate
Engel's are usually more expensive than Waeco's, but they are also more rugged.
Engel have just released a cheaper version that's aimed squarely at the plastic Waeco's but still with the Engel compressor. Pretty much all the other portable compressor fridges use the Danafoss compressor.
Here is a link to the new (and cheaper) Engel
Engel Eclipse
This is the one I'd buy
Cheers, Will.

Yep,
If/when my old (used to be green) 29L jobbie dies, I reckon I'll be lookin' at one o' those..........
When I say "old", I acquired it 2nd hand either late 1978, or early '79 (too long ago to remember precisely), which means it's pushin' 30yrs old... been around the block a coupla times, and every which way across the middle, and it just keeps on keepin' on.......................

Most of the
well known brands are similar in performance.
I have a Waeco cf50 and so far so good. I had some initial teething problems with low voltage output on my vehicle but since that was sorted out ,everythigs been great.
