hey guys
doing a service on my 98 LC 105 4.2 diesel with aftermarket turbo
would like some advice on a top quality oil.
the previous owner said he used shell rimula i think from memory
(not sure though) i have been using nulon oil because it had a better rating than the shell but i'm not sure how good this oil actually is as i dont know of anybody who uses this oil,i want the best oil with the best rating.and what do you think of the nulon oil.i think that its ok but may lose its viscosity fairly quickly, though i am no expert on oil...
i would like peoples opinions

I have always used Penrite olis in all the cars i've owned (some high performance V8s and turbo'd 4cyls). Running their HPR GAS synthetic in my dual feulled 'cruiser. I think they make great oils and are pretty reasonably priced for full synthetic or semi blends.
I have never owned a diesel though, but i know Penrite have a range to suit them aswell.

There seems to be different oil formulas for Jap and American diesels if you read the fine print on the 20 litre drums. I use Castrol Jmax which is supposed to be formulated for Jap diesels.
Mobil also have an oil for Jap engines but I can't remember the code.

I also have a cruiser with a 1Hz and an aftermarket turbo. I use the Penrite HPR Diesel 15. Many has recommended this oil to me.

I have done a fair amount of research on oils on various forums etc and it seems Penrites name comes up the most often as a quality oil. I have changed the oil in wifes Paj from castrol gtx2 to Penrite10/60 and the motor seems to run smoother in the higher rev range.

I use HPR15 Diesel in my 76 Series Cruiser and have been since the 5000k service and its going great. Now 21000ks on it 80% of that towing a 21ft Van.

Hi brentos,
I use Penrite HPR Diesel 15, change it every 5000km's plus the filter.
And every 10000k's an engine oil flush, just to clean her out. The old girls got just under 300 000 k's on her now. Another thing I've done is, I got three magnets out of an old starter motor and placed them on the out side of the filter. I really didn't think they would do much, cut the filter up the first time I tried them and found a fine metallic sludge where the magnets had sat on the inside of filter. Weird I know, but it can't hurt. Anyway.
Yeah I'd recommend Penrite.

Penrite are good however I have started using Amsoil in my 2 Cummins Diesel Engines (Boat) because it is a top quality synthetic oil and you can take back your own containers and they will re-fill with new oil when you need it, works out more affordable this way. Also remember when you are using good quality oil like Amsoil and penrite etc you don't need Nulon additives etc etc.

Having been a light vehicle mechanic for some years now, I have found that most of the leading brands are pretty good.
If you match the requirements of the motor to the oil.
As mentioned, check the rating of oil that your vehicle requires in the manual.
Then look on the companys website, and put in your vehicle details and make an informed decision from there.
My Father used rimula x 15-40 for years on the farm in all the vehicles, both diesel and pettys, and we had no oil related problems.
In my workshop I used BP oils, and have been very pleased at the performance that this deliverd over the years.
Both in general service, and racing applications.
I used to service many diesels too, mostly travellers who would drop in on the way up to their destinations, and then ring up before they came back, and I would once again service them on their return joureny.
I had a fun collection of service stickers from different areas for a while.
I currently use BP Vanellus c6 for the lux.
I would not reccomend going for a thicker viscosity oil than what is reccomended in a diesel
