Well I'll start off this can of worms. Currently I run both BF Goodrich and Coopers with Goodrich on the front why well I got 6 Coopers and they started to cut up and little chunchs started to come off so in time I will only have BF Goodrich. Mine are 225 75 16

Whats the best tyre is wide open for debate as you will see, what I will say is have a look in under the search function and type in tyres should give you days of reading.

Have fun searching :)

bf goodrich are the best for all round performance BUT in saying that you MUST modify your tyre pressures and speed according to the conditions.

go talk to tyrepower in alice, their advice is sound. they may try and sell you toyos cause theyre the toyo agent but stick with bf goodrich AT's... happy trails... rod

As said, this is a minefield.

I really think some tyres require more input from the operator. The "enthusiast" treads require you to manage your tyre pressures when terrains change especially higher speeds.

Are you hitting your bridgys hard on dirt roads? If so a cooper or mickeyT or whatever will do the same and tear/split tread blocks.
Punishing big block treads on bitumen will also do the same. You need to drive accordingly to your tyres. You dont hammer Mud Terrain's around town pretending your like a boy racer. When you get to your dirt roads reduce your speed. When you get to your low range off road activity centre drop your pressures.

You need to work out..
How much off road will these tyres see???
What terrains will these tyres see???

I am not saying these are the best and they are not all terrain but so far they have worked for me as a second set on my Hilux. They are Goodyear Wrangler TG 206 x 16 LT 112 load rating. This one has done 5032 ks. That has included many short bush trips as well as approximately 800 ks on the Victorian High Country tracks plus about 2000 ks on sealed roads at highway speeds in extreme heat getting to and from them.

The whole lot has been on factory recommended pressures as per the book (25 psi front/25 to 34 rear depending on load) except for about 30 ks on very muddy but relatively rock free mountain tracks when I brought them down to 21/26.

There are no missing chunks of rubber and all cuts are no worse than what can be seen in this photo. Judging by some wear indicator marks that I put on them when new, they have lost approximately 1 mm of rubber. This would suggest about 60,000ks out of them but I will not keep them beyond 50 to 60%.

I would expect any all terrain of similar specifications to do just as good a job except the smoother tread of an AT should last a little longer. Check all the tyre company web sites. There is not a lot in 205/16 but there are enough to give you a few choices.

There is also the 7.00 x 16 size that could be useful. These come in steel belted, all steel and cross ply in a variety of tread patterns and were the stock size on Hiluxes a few years ago. Image Could Not Be Found

Interesting report but 5032 km's?. The last set of BFG's I threw away had 97,000 on them The current set have 12,000 on them and I'm not sure if I've paid the credit card bill for them yet!
Sorry, I don't mean to be derogatory but it's really hard to tell how a tyre will perform in it's early years. I always get depressed about how mine wear up to about 40,000. Then I sort of forget about them for another 40,000, until I notice they're looking a bit sad. then it takes another 10,000 or so of procrastination and looking at alternatives before someone offers me a deal and I bolt on another set of BFG MT's.
This is set four now and I can't really complain.

I know it is early stages but they have been over a lot of sharp rocks and so far so good. I included them only because you don't see very much information on 205 x16s of any brand. These are only for occassional use and it has taken me ten months to get up to that distance.

Sorry Splits. I realised after I posted that my comment might seem a bit rude but it wasn't meant to be.
5000km's in ten months and half off road. That's commendable. I'm jealous. I probably do as much off road as you, but there's 30,000 + on road in between. I spend far too much of my life looking through a windscreen!

I'll back Splits on these TG's.

Have been using them on 75 & 79 series utes for nearly 20 years, and got 50K out of the first set. These were 8 ply tyres.

Now using 10 ply's and they are wearing well, as well as not having any puncture/blow-out problems.

Run 40 psi everywhere, unless its wet, or sandy. They work good in mud too.

Hooroo,
Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

The worst cases of chipped tyres I've seen have been with Cooper ST, BFGATKO and Bridgestone 661.

You may want to consider 225/75R16 - larger range of LT construction tyres and same diameter as your 205R16.

I'm soon to put on a set of Khumo KL78(?) LT215/85-16, these will give you a bit more clearance and they have a 110 load rating. Haven't been able to get any feedback on them as not too many people use that size but they might be woth considering.
