Hi Everyone, I hav`nt used this site for a while therefore having to recreate my screen name as I forgot my previous name.

I am trying to decide which GPS to get. After hours of researching them I am leaning towards the garmin 760 with the "Shonky map" setup or "Tracks for Australia".

Then I spotted the Magellan crossover which is dearer, but I just want to use it for City navigation, and have general camping tracks like Fraser Island, Rainbow beach tracks, General Capeyork tracks etc. and the Breadcrumb trail looks handy.

Would the 760 be a good buy ?
And how many loaves of bread do I need to carry ?
Cheers.

Whats the price difference? Magellan have their packages (Topo, Street by Street), do Garmin do the same?

Magellan Crossover is around $1000 with topo.

Garmin 760 $550
Tracks for australia $ 40
Shonky maps is free I think

Saved yourself $400 straight away! They are all a bit gadgety/gimmicky and not really vitally neccessary. We got by without them, we all live on an island and you'll eventually get to the beach. Dont get me wrong, in car navigation is good and fun but the ability to navigate with a map, stars, sun, watch and even the luxury of a compass is more important. The navigators are most useful in the urban environment as you can concerntrate on driving and not map reading. In the bush they are good for letting you know where you are, but you should have an idea of that anyway.

No No No ?
I think your confused I was going to use the bread to make a trail behind me, then sattelites pickup the breadcrumb trail before it all gets eaten by birds and stores all the co-ordinates then sends them directly to my GPS reciever so I then no where I have been.

Have a close look at the Hema Navigator does both well. I was looking at a Magellan Crossover, but found the Navigator far more versatile for my purposes.

Just another option for you

cheers

Mrbrush
I purchased the crossover in 2/08 @ the local 4wd show.
street by street, is great.
tracks map, i found not so great, yes it has bread crumbs.
sent the SD card back yesterday for an upgrade to both maps.
hopefully they will both be improved, especially tracks.
I was going to say Doug will reply with his Nuvi, but he beat me to it. ??
good luck Tom
