I would like to know what the camping, fishing and mudcrabbing is like at Balla Balla, Nth of Whim Creek. We don't have a boat.

Hi Watery been a couple of years since I was in there The boss operates Westmore Island just off the mouth of the creek and uses Balla Balla as a landing placeCamping no worries at the end of the road it is pretty open but Memory serves me right back towards Whim Ck there a couple of good spots. Fishing and Mudcrabing off the banks should be good a small dinghy would be better.
The Pub is unfortunately not open anymore the mining company uses it for quarters

Lots of sandflys (and flys at certain times of the year). Watch the tides as on the top of a high spring tide whe water comes up a long way. You can camp along the creek further inland (between the boat launching area and the highway) which is quite nice, or you can camp near the boat launching area which is just mud flats (and can flood)... I have seen a Barra caught from shore at the boat launching area at night, and plenty of small Mulloway and Mud Crabs.
Just do it - it is an experience!!

watery,
was there a couple of years ago,Drew is spot on about the sandfly's
you would'nt camp at the ramp, camp further back, if my memory is right the river had decent bank's on the other side,
you could still get a drink at the pub/canteen, caught a few muddies in the creek but better fishing around the river mouth.

Unfortunately it gets fished out as it is so close to all the mine workers now - still a nice place to go fishing though - just dont expect to catch much anymore.......

Yes - it's fished out ... comments on one of the fishing forums were talking about it having been netted . Still get meals & drinks in pub - no accomodation though (mine) . Sandflies can be bad .... big plans to mine Magnetite will certainly destroy the area

Few people still catching some fish and crabbing seems to be OK also. One of my staff went up there about two months ago and were pulling crab nets, the last one they pulled was heavier than expected and up came a croc. Word is that it was approx 2m long and waited until it was seen before moving off. There are also photos in the Whim Creek pub of a croc sighted at Balla Balla. Like most places up here and further north, a little bit of care needs to be taken.

Cheers

Ray
