I am considering converting a Nissan Patrol GQ to a dual cab inclusive of a chassis extension. Can anyone offer any tips/advice that I should consider before proceeding ie: how long should I extend the chassis, what sort of effect does such a conversion have on ramp-over performance etc. Are people who have done these conversions on their own vehicles been happy with the outcome etc

Met a bloke in Tassie who had done his own, retired engineer, also converted it to full 6WD not just a lazy axle.

It looked the goods. He had also done some engine mods as well but not too sure whether it was a stock 4.2 he worked on or a different engine.

He initially tried it with the standard 4.2 diesel but lacked performance to tow his home made 5th wheeler.

have had several done now, but have a look at what you want to achieve & check state regs
all mine have 6x6 or 6x4 conversions & work great with a gmv of 4500kg (the 6x4 works the best as a all rounder & is my personal work & play vehicle the 6x6 has always some rear end problem
1 Insurance can be a problem (body conversion)
2 most with just a 4x4 still have the original GMV so you may loose carrying capacity pending weight
3 chassis conversions with still a 4x4 often have the same gmv same problem as 2
4 if a chassis conversion bigger turning circle, will get stuck in the guts a lot, will go thru steering components more often
5 MAKE sure what ever you do its had a full engineers ticket or a 3 manufactures plate fitted some Qld blue plates as not excepted in NSW
feel free to ask any other questions or if close come & have a look
regards Vince

I have a Patrol done by Specialised Vehicles near Camden NSW $16K with 600mm stretch, tip top tray, wheel well storage lockers, engineered to 3500kg GVM with the right paperwork and plate attached. Tare is 60Kg LIGHTER than as a wagon. Turning circle and rampover worse but manageable. Highly sensitive to driveshaft balance. I'm happy with the result. There seem to be a few joints getting in on the act, I'd be carefull, it's not as easy as it looks when you do the stretch.
