Good morning
I was looking at purchasing a mosquito net to use with the swag, and the options available are, as usual, confusing:
- cheap nets in white or green: look ok but rather large holes, does it really stop mozzies and sandflies???
- more exxy nets: small holes, don't they slow down ventilation?
- exxy white nets: advertised as "World Health Organisation recommends white nets as you can see if any mozzie has managed to get in" - makes sense I would have thought...
- exxy black/dark nets: advertised as "black net gives great visibility looking out at night"
- permethrin treated nets: is it worth it?
- shape: hoop or box nets?
- forget it and get a small screen dome?
- do I have too much time on my hands to worry about all this??
All comments appreciated!
Cheers
Ted

In the middle of Dengue Fever territory .... you need to ask .... ???
Grab an ex army one from disposal store or a mates kid in the
services. Compact and roll up in swag. Tie it up to whatver you tie the fly for your swag to.
For bigger stopovers - get one of the el cheap
shop screen sunrooms for about $200 and set up
camp in that.

Gidday Ted,
We have a double swag and purchased a mossie dome that you put the swag in.
In the warmer weather or when we just want to watch the stars we use this set up.
A couple of the reasons behind the mossie dome was to stop the flies and mossies and to stop any creepy crawlies from coming in at night and because the boss said so.
The mossie dome cost about $69.00 and folds up half the size of a
camp chair.
It take less than a minute to set the mossie dome up and put the swag in, then hey presto, instant bed. Good stuff!
I got ours from the swag place at home but they are also available at most good
camping stores.
Cheers
Greg

Yep - I have a Blackwolf Hiking Dome (at least I think that is what it is called) that I use for
camping in my swag. The footprint of it is the same shape as the swag and it is all sandfly-proof mesh. It is great to have a good night sleep not getting eaten alive by sandflys or sharing the swag with a snake.... It takes about 30 seconds to put up and rolls up in the swag - wouldnt go
camping without it!!

Gday Ted,
"- do I have too much time on my hands ??" Yes
I think you have answered all your own questions as it sounds like you know the difference between them all.
How often will you use it?
Do you want it to stand out like dogs balls at night?
Are you likely to hang it from a single tree branch or something similar, or would you put in star pickets around a bed frame?
How much room do you have to store it or will it live in the end of your swag?
While working I used the square ones because we used to carry cyclone mesh bed frames and star pickets...and it was small enough to live in my swag because you never new when you might want it......worked great
Now I use the one with a top like an umbrella.....you can hang it on the side of the car if there is nothing else...does the job.
It really depends on what you want it for.
Cheers

We use a mozzie dome that also has a fly sheet so it can become a tent if needed. Thinking seriously about a swag with hoops and lots of screening built in however. Like to see those stars. Unless I am sure that flies/mozzies (and mozzies bother me much more than flies) aren't wherever I am going, I always take a mozzie dome. I think the black one's do improve visibility and I'd go for one of them.
Camped at Dalhgousie Springs once without a dome. That left lasting impression that means I never travel without one.

Thanks for all those who replied. I think I'll buy a larger mesh dome like this
"4 man" mozzie dome For the little extra cost I don;t have to worry what to hang it from, have more space inside and it keeps the snakes / ants / other
pests out. Forgot about that...
