Hi all, I'm digging into your vast experience and hoping you can help if you've had a similar problem to me with a 12/06 KUN26 Hilux with the common rail diesel engine. The vehicle had water through the fuel system which required replacement of the fuel supply pump by a dealer. Since then, the engine detonates/pings/rattles under acceleration when the engine is cold. Once it has warmed up, it appears to be ok. I have checked the efi temp sensor and it appears to be working ok and I get a current engine temp when connecting the scan tool.
I wouldn't discount that the injectors may also have had water in them, but don't know if they would cause this problem. Any ideas/previous experience.
Grateful as always for any input.

Hop over to pradopoint.com

Massive thread in the Diesel section.

The D4D's have problems. It appears all manufacturers are having problems with CRD type engines.

Your experience sounds like the injectors are the problem. Advanced stages of what you are describing has led to big $$$.

I have a Prado D4D, 26,000km 16 monthls old. No problems yet.

Thanks for the reply, the info on pradopoint was great and basically tells me that there is nothing I can do about the problem but to get the customer to keep on Toyotas back about it.
Thanks again.

There have been issues with pre-detonation when cold in the Prado D4D engines (same as Hilux). Here is a link to the Pradopoint thread discussing the issue. Link

Yep, got the message now Leachy, was actually going to swap ecu's out of another car this morning to quickly see if it made any difference, but that is not as easy as it normally is as it is a bit of a mission with all of the brackets and wires, so gave up on trhat idea. I'll just get onto a more productive job and leave this one alone.
Thanks mate.

Thanks for the reply, but this is not normal, I have another one in the shop and it has the usual diesel knock, but nothing like the problem child I'm looking at, it sounds like it has broken parts flying around inside the engine.

It's normal, we have this engine in our Hilux and that is 2 and a half years old and in a new Hiace that has done 1200k and they both do it.

If you don't want advice don't ask for it...looks like you have already made your mind up so why ask the question.

Why not pull it apart and find the fault.

Sounds like an injector fault to me,we have replaced many a supply pump for the same reason but occasionally water does cause damage to an injector.

They will idle fine but under load they knock and smoke and carry on.They need to be scanned to ascertain there fitness.

Hi Jon
I have a 07 D4D with 51000 on the clock & mine makes the same noise. the shaft also, clunks, just like the 200's. every one seems to think it's normal.
anyhow, below is a reply to this question on, pradopoint, from, clifton....

No they do not inject on every stroke otherwise we would get severe fuel dilution and high bearing surface wear, but I know where you are coming from.

The 1KD-FTV engines are HCCI Engines which stand for Homogeneous Combustion Compression Ignition Engines what a lovely acronym Aye.

The Toyota IKD-FTV engine uses UNIBUS (Uniform bulky combustion) which comprises a combination of early and late injection timing.

The operation is up to half load and speed. The concept is described by
Toyota Engineers and many papers have been written on the subject.

The early injected fuel undergoes a low temperature
reaction while the late injection serves as an ignition trigger and sets off
the high temperature reaction. The first injection or pilot injection quantity is small.

Jon,

We have several hilux trays and utes at work with the same engine(1KD) and since new when cold they sound as if they are about to drop their bundle but when warm sound normal. most have done well over 130ks now and still perform and sound exactly the same as when they were new so i wouldnt worry too much. cheers Paul
