In my opinion get something with a bit more grunt. The engine problem was with the 3 liters up to 2003 I think....but not 100% sure. Do a search in here and you will find thousands of threads on the blown engines

Sounds like a wind up ?? but anyway the 2.8 's are fine. If well serviced it will look after you. There was a few with people talking about blown heads but as a member on here has one and was told the same thing after he spent a fair bit of time trying to find the heating issue turned out to be the header tank. Had it fixed no issues. The box isn't as strong as the 4.2L diesel but is fine behind the 2.8. Expect in the 10/11L per 100 free way. You might need to look at upgrading the suspension if going to the top. If it still has the same suspension (original) I would say it would be r/s and will fail as soon as you hit the rutted roads. If your looking for info in regards to the 3 litre do a search on here. Not going down that path.

bevan83,

Have a 98 2.8 ltr G.U. Patrol with about 138,000 ks on it. No major problems to date. Just remember that this motor is no rocket engine and takes a little to get wound up. Fitted with a power up chip and it turns into something quite good but still no sports car.

Only extra filter fitted to mine was an adaptor plate to replace the original fuel filter with a C.A.V. type filter.

Have heard rumours about this motor blowing turbos but have not known any myself. Try the patrolforum as this will usually have all the possible problems.

My fuel consumption is 14-15 ltr/100kms, never got below 14 but often higher.

If you are a patient driver this vehicle will serve you well.

Bevan83,

I have never had any problems starting my patrol, the chip gave a good increase in power and reduced the turbo lag in the lower rev range, and I am not sure about what it did to the fuel consumption at the time I thought it did not alter it too much. Price for the chip was about $1200.00 but money well spent I think.

having owned a 99 2.8 i was more than satisfied with its performance. never had a problem starting it,yes it was a little under powered especialy if towing a 5 meter boat up a hill,as for fuel ecomomy it was around 13 to 14 liters 100 ks more if towing the boat. the comfort was like driving my car. if i was going back to 4x4 in all honesty i think the 4.2 would be a better option

You would do a lot better with a 4.5 Petrol on LPG.

Heaps more grunt and cheaper to run.

Disclaimer: LPG may be expensive and/or have limited supply in remote areas.

"You can't beat a diesel in the bush"????

This is a misnomer.

The 4.5 has more power, more torque and with the combined fuel capacity of LPG and ULP, better range. Hence a better bush vehicle.

Also a better road car. Also more economical to run. Also a better tow vehicle.

Shouldn't be any dearer to buy, quite possibly cheaper.

Anyway, your money to spend anyway you wish. Just throwing up some thoughts.

Jim.
