We took a short drive from
Kununurra to
El Questro today to have lunch and also went out to
Explosion gorge. We will be heading up the full length of the Gibb on Friday. The thing is no one slows down as they come towards you and most of them seem to be hire 4x4s they don't seem to care if they damage them or other peoples 4B's. How about a bit of courtesy and slow down on bad roads when you pass. I love 4WD as much as the next person but when you are on a budget every penny counts and we want our 4B's to last more than one trip.

I agree with you.
But the ironic thing is that its your speed that usually determines what damage is done to your car. So I pull over and slow down so I don't break a windscreen..

With you on that Phil - although still have done a windscreen every year to keep QBE honest. Just finished sorting out the leaks that W O'B left when doing the replacement - took them 3 goes.
But for some reason the GRR and speed seem to go hand-in-hand.
Talked to a two couples who have just done a 4 week GRR trip and I am flabbergasted that they didn't see any
brolgas the whole trip, and they didn't see one frill-neck on the
Mitchell Plateau - and despite me telling them where to find them prior and despite
camping at
King Edward River didn't look at the art!!
You can't tell me that there weren't
brolgas. You can't tell me there weren't reptiles. They were just too focused on getting somewhere fast in my view.

You may be surprised but many travellers probably don't care for brolga's, frill-neck lizards or rock art. For them the trip is all about getting there & back. (then highlighting the route on their giant Australian map when they get home) Not that there's anything wrong with that either. Just as some see no point in driving fast others see no point in taking pictures of flowers ;-)
Cheers Craig..............

Don't think speed would have been a factor in missing the art :)

Well I'm not one for flowers either much -
well, except big fields of them, and the art thing was because they had seen "so much of it" in Central Australia. Oh
well... no wonder the
Mitchell Plateau is not a National
Park.

Totally agree. Almost every out back road is plagued by
alpha hotels sitting on 100 k plus regardless of oncoming traffic.
Many are obviously not owner driven. But some clearly are.
Slowing down for a few hundred metres in a trip of 1000 kms is hardly a big imposition. But a replacement windscreen is.
Passed a convoy once occupying the crown of the road at high speed showered us with rocks even though we slowed and kept
well to the left. Radio message to number two vehicle in my convoy soon had them diving for the soft stuff. Very satisfying.

Oh! YES! Lots of rentals and careless individuals - and hope this does not raise the level too much - BUT three of our worst experiences (all separate and spaced out from years 2000 through to 2004) were from 4WD club convoys, each of 7 plus vehicles on each occasion, which were driving very fast and very close to each other, absolutely hooning along out back tracks with the radio chat reinforcing both that they were on a club trip and were 'having some fun where they thought no one else would know who they were'.
A 'breaker' call on the UHF ch they used soon made them realise their ID was known!
Hence after we moved back to the big smoke we now avoid 4WD clubs.
We find this is most unfortunate because our experience with the then (late 1990's) active
Woomera 4WD club was of excellence and care for others and the environment!

Bob,
I am one that does slow down to oncoming so don't shoot me for the next comment.
I have often wondered how much extra fuel is used in slowing down and getting back up to speed (remembering I am hauling 5.5-6T of car and van) every time I pass a vehicle. If it happens 20 times a day for the entire holiday then I imagine it would add up to be a considerable amount?????
Even though I think like this, I still slow down out of respect for my vehicle and others.
Cheers, Trevor.

Our lifestyles are so hectic these days we all need to slow down be it on the road or with life itself. Take notice of the things around us and smell the flowers so to speak. Step back and relax, life is to short.

Good call Crow.
Sick and tired of idiots, big truck, good gear on it, costs heaps, and some "richard-head" gives the vehicle heaps,,, WHY ?
The vehicle is built to take it ?........WRONG, not at speed anyway.
Just inconsiderate, with no perception of cost or danger !
Classic example is a story I got told, of an idiot on
the Tanami Track where a loaded up "Cruiser" towing a "T-Van" camper, or one of the more expensive ones, passing everything as hard as he could..
Hits a washout at hight speed and did a roll over, destroying everything...
Will he learn from that,, not likely, idiots and inconsiderate people are everywhere, and they can never be told.
We just have to learn to pick them out, and re-adjust their attitude.
Cheers
Bucky

I just look after number 1 first my vehicle and if others (hire vehicle or owner driver) prefer to move at warp speed I hopefully have enough time to move
well out of their way.
Courtesy yes would be nice, bit hard to teach however.
I also prefer to look after my vehicle more importantly the people in it.

Yes. it is operating.
Nup - it is unlikely to close. Thankfully Voyages or their parent co GPT anyways, is getting out of the tourism industry.
Perhaps they worked out they couldn't organise a bleep up in a brewery.

On my way up to
Innamincka, I cant think where it actually was now but
miles of narrow, 1 1/2 lane road, I see a vehicle coming the other way. My theory is that if i move off the road and slow down till the other vehicle passes, he can have the whole road, i dont get sprayed with rocks and scar or break my 2 month old windscreen.
So i do as above, move of the road, all the oncoming vehicles still move half off the road and spray my vehicle anywayat 100 kph.
You cant imagine the oncoming drivers not realising what was going on.. No one had the courtesy to do the same to me but i think i would have realised what they were trying to achieve. Or is that too much ask??
Michael
