Hi everyone
Q1. Can anyone shed some light on 2003 3.0 ltr patrol fuel tanks, main tank supposed to hold 95 ltr and sub tank 30 ltr's. I have only ever filled main tank to 81ltrs and sub tank 20 ltr's.

Q2. When you change to sub tank do you just leave button on let it switch off automatically or do you have to manually switch it off? I have never left in on too long, once it gets to empty I switch off as you can haer the pump from inside the cabin.

Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
1. I don't think the tank sizes have changed since the series I GU. My subtank on my Series I definitely holds 30 litres, and while I've never filled the main from empty, I have put a bit over 90 litres in it.
2. When you operate the subtank button, it slowly pumps the fuel from the subtank to the main. When finished, it just switches off. You can terminate the transfer by pushing the button again and it will stop. Additionally, every time you start the motor the transfer pump runs for about 10 seconds, so you will see the tank slowly drain over a period of time.
Interestingly, the petrol versions had 36 litres in the subtank even tho it was the same physical tank. Something to do with the transfer method; diesel uses a different method to petrol and can't pull the full amount out. Apparently (I've been told), if you run the subtank dry, you can still undo the drain plug and pull out another 5-6 litres out.

Hi Joc

I get about 800-850km from main tank but am thinking I should another 100km if tank holds 95 ltrs but am worried about running it out, then may have to bleed system. Same with sub tank should be able to use more than 20 ltrs but guage is already way down towards empty

Cheers Rob

Aha! Sounds like you've fallen for the trap of believing the fuel guages. Both main and subtank guages not only go way beyond zero, but are hopelessly non-linear. The bottom line is to empty the tanks completely to accurately find out their capacity. You need to do a couple of checks:
- Try filling the sub-tank after you've let the pump empty it, and you'll probably get your 30L in. And note the fuel guage setting when empty - will most likely be way below zero. Also note how many litres to fill back to the zero setting and the halfway setting on the guage.
- Similarly, with fuel in the subtank, try seeing how far you get on the main tank. Again, note a few things; The distance when the light comes on, the distance when the guage reads zero and the distance travelled to empty after the guage reads zero. Only transfer as much fuel as you need to the main tank to get you to a filling station so you can check how much fuel that main tank takes. And when filling, note how much fuel to fill back to zero and half way.
You'll get some interesting results and should note these for future reference.

Hi Joc

I did read from the patrol manual that sub tank pump stops automatically, I have never seen/heard this and have let it run for
30-40 mins to empty, again, guage says empty and pump is loud enough to hear in the cab, is this normal?

BTW, thanks for all the interesting reading and useful knowledge,

Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
The pump is slow and will take about 10-15 mins to transfer a full subtank. It will shut down automatically when fuel transfer is completed, indicated by the light on the subtank button going out. 30-40 mins sounds too long.
But it is normally very quiet (I certainly can't hear it), so if you can hear it, there is an issue.
cheers,
Gerry

Rob, my sub tank holds 31 ltrs when empty, may I suggest you run the sub tank till the pump stops and see how many litres you can fit into it. John

Rob
Hope you are cycling the sub-tank thru, all the time.

I do when the main gets to 1/2 way, the sub tank is transfered, every time.

When I fill up I do the sub tank first.

Cheers

Agree with figures used above

1/ Specification is 95lt main and 30lt sub for diesel and 36lt in same phyiscal size subtank for petrol.

Max I have got into my petrol are 92lt main and 41lt sub.

2/ The sub tank pump switches off automatically.

Hi Roachie

Just another advantage of the petrol 4800 ---

Normally I average about 39 into it and the rest depends on the angle of the car.
I didn't really include by best figure which was approx 45lt cause that was parked at base of big red couple of weeks ago with the driver side tail high on a hummock.

My 3.0Di will only use 26 Litres from the sub tank. It still has about 15L in the main tank when the light comes on.
