dirtbikeworld.net has had threads about this. I remember a couple of years ago there was a thread along the lines of 'show us your trailer'.

It has some relevance for me Johnny as we have built a 3 bike one espically for crossing the Simpson dessert recently which it completed sucessfully.

The entire steel trailer weighed 300kg finished of which the 3 235/85/16 wheels and tyres weighed 100kg.

This meant it just fitted into the usual 750kg unbraked limit
with 3 * 110kg trail bikes on it.

It also carried 180 lt of fuel which was about same weight as a 4th bike.

We spent a lot of time getting the basic frame right and used long leaf springs from a falcon I think backed up with shocks.

Entire Trailer cost about $1000 ex wheels.

You could build one lighter if not for off-road.

Can't remember exact sizes John , I still haven't had time to write it up, but I will, and can get exact sizes if needed.

Put a photo of the main part in my member pages , its upside down but shows main structure quite well.

From it you can see we used a main single drawbar not an "A" frame. Think it was 100mm X 50X 3mm thick . This enabled it to almost jackknife.
Used a 360 main coupling from ebay at $100.

Used trak 11 16X7 wheels which matched the Patrols wheels.

This trailer was designed as a bed onto which we bolted pre-made bike channels. This gives us flexibility to re-configure it.
And gaps between the channels were just size to accept plastic jerry cans laying flat down, which helped a lot.

Rather than use mesh infills we hand welded lots of strips of 19mm wide strapping, which allowed much easier use of Ocky straps to tie everthing down with.

We used paint , gal would have been better however in reality
several modifications were required to get the base just right because we needed high performance and long wheel travel for the suspension. I think we re-welded the rear spring hangers and there relationship to the guards 3 times.

When fully loaded at 750kg the trailer sits with guards only 20mm from tyres because of the soft long travel springs.

Indeed we travelled Birdsville track with the 6 jerry cans empty to maximize the use of the 20mm travel.
When bikes were removed we had 150mm of travel for the actual simpson crossing whereas others we went with had there trailer commercially made with standard stuff and they bounced around a lot causing issues and increased car loading.
The handling of our trailer in the rough stuff was noticeably better.

After the basic unit was done rails were added from the guards to the ends and these were large enough that each rider could fine his bag of gear there as this was a closely planned event and everything relating the the bikes was carried on the trailer hence freeing up the car for the 4 passengers.

also , guys i used to ride with had a bike trailer ( i just transported mine in my work van )

he added a LPG bbq hotplate to it -- just after the tyre guard -- it would flip up and down as needed and was a fantastic addition - something you should consider ;)

Boc

P.s wish i had photos , but i dont ..
