I have just returned from doing the
Canning Stock Route and Gunbarrel. Great trip and now looking for the next adventure. I was thinking of driving around the gulf and into Arnhem land. Has anyone done this trip, what tracks were covered and what permits required.. Tks Stu

Stu
Your question is a tad vague
Where exactly to you want to travel?
Permits are hard to come by these days. You can get them but they are very specific about where, what and how
Cheers

Tks for the note. I was thinking of a trip as remote as possible. Starting say
Burketown, following the coast as close as possible to Hells
Gate, n Nathan River Nungukurr,
Bulman, Nanangala,Maningride,
Black Point and then onto
Darwin

You may be able to get access to the coast from individual stations but as I recall there is really only the road from
Burketown to
Borroloola and then up to the
Roper River. Nathan River is now a National
Park. You can get access close to the coast at Lorella Springs and also if you go out to
Roper River mouth. Access into Arnhemland via Ngukurr is most likely a pipe dream as permits are not given out. You may get a permit to drive to
Nhulunbuy from and back to
Katherine.
Black Point is accessible via permit at great cost (about $250 as I recall)from the East Alligator crossing
Cheers

Not sure what part of Arnham land you are wanting to access, I drove into
Nhulunbuy about 3 weeks ago on the central Hwy. Road in good condition, I towed the camper and travelled mostly around 80. Some bull dust and all rivers possible, You can get a permit from the Northern Land Council in
Tennant Creek or Kathryn. Only one road in and out tad under 700 km one way.
Cheers ... Geoff

Stu, As Richard states, you can't get permits to go off the main track into Gove. Once in Gove permits to access
the beach etc is available from Dhimurru, at a cost.

Its not that ar fetched of a trip....Father in law knows a man that lives out at borrooloola and he does all right...
there would be plenty of permits to get but
well worth it....there is one i think that allows you to get on some beach right up the top somewhere,,,pretty pricey but worth it from what i hear...also steve from top end tours who is on here would be one to talk to as
well....

Sorry to be a kill joy here but Arnhem Land does not allow travellers to access their territory,
nhulunbuy permit is as far as you can get up central arnhem rd and back, there is no traversing the top of Arnhem toward
Darwin, their is no permit to do so !!, and no vehicular permits granted!( however if you have the $$$ one can charter a plane to fly into one or 2 townships) Ive tried many a time and it is no go ! Dont take my word for it everyone should try for the permit, starting with the northern land council permit application and await your response.

Where abouts are you tobster?
On the subject of permits for East Arhnem Land, the Northern Lands Council, NT Police nor Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation can give you an exact definition as to what the Federal Intervention means by " permit system is cancelled"
Access to
Nhulunbuy from
Katherine is not a problem on a "no cost" permit from NLC. Trip should take you anywhere from 9 - 12 hours depending on how aften you want to stop. 12 hours is a comfortable trip allowing stops for the Enscarpment,
Bulman and
(Personaly I think it's about time a lot of these communities in the NT started giving controlled access to ALL Australians.
After living in Arhnem Land for the last 30 years I have to admit it's taken me a very long time to realise just how disenfranchised a larger percentage of the balanda
population here have become).
