Hi all, Done a quick search but didnt come up with a hell of a lot of information regarding these vehicles and I cant pass on much myself.

A friend of a friend of my brother has a 2.8 td Disco sitting in his back yard, apparently untidy, a good runner and unregistered.
Its been offered to me for virtually peanuts and I think it would make a good project vehicle.
It wont replace my Patrol but compliment it.

Its about a 2 day drive to go and check it out so would like a little info [good and bad] on these models, any particular problems they suffered from etc.
Sorry....cant even give you a year at the moment.

Cheers....Lionel.

The type of disco you are talking about did not have a 2.8 td - they are all 2.5s - earliest is 200 series 2.5l 4cylinder, no electrics, the second is a 300 series 2.5l 4cylinder, no electrics and the last is the TD5 2.5l 5 cylinder which is a fully electronic diesel.

200 is from 1990 to early 94
300 from 94 to early 99
TD5 is in the Disco 2 (longer body) from 99 until 04/05.

You need to know which you are talking about.

Willem, why not just say what's wrong with Discos if you know something? There's no reason to be rude just because someone has asked what your issues are.

Hi Graeme

When I want advise from you I will do so politlely. The issue you have raised pertains to a poster who has no forum manners like addressing me in the correct way. When this happens I respond in the same manner and sometimes I am rude which I am entitled to be.

The advice I have to give has nothing to do with Discovery's but has something to do with Landrover in general. The advice is aimed at Lionel,. with whomI have corrresponded before off forum. Now I am giving him the chance to seek that advice or discard it.

Cheers

What point? If Willem wants to say things outside of the forum, why didn't he just MM Lionel in the first place. Willem is an abrasive bugger and I'm amazed that the people who use and run this forum continue to allow him to get away with it...

Garrycol's initial question was perfectly reasonable and didn't deserve that response...

Regardless, Willem's feedback is typically illogical - i.e. he has a particular tale of woe (presumably a story about one particular vehicle), but somehow it doesn't apply to Discovery's but all Landrovers in general! Hilarious...

What I did was to wind idiots like you up.

Become a Member of this forum and make a worthwhile contribution. Before that happens you are just a blank face in a crowd.

Garrycol got that response as he showed a lack of forum manners and etiquette.

ah Willem, you continue to amuse me. Just being a 'member' of a forum doesn't automatically make your contributions worthwhile. It also doesn't excuse you for being completely out of line in terms of basic human decency and respect for others. The lack of moderation on this forum surprises me - people like you don't last long on other forums...

Hey feral

This isn't just any other forum!

I have been here since 2002. The moderation on this forum is very adequate.

So what is there to moderate? apart from swear words.

You Landrover owners are a prickly mob (apart from Member Axle) and get your fluff up over nothing

But like I have said before....you are just a blank face

And here endeth the lesson

of course you'd think the moderation was adequate - they've let you get away with insulting people since 2002! Age doesn't equal wisdom, and you clearly don't realise that age, experience, being a paid member since 2002 etc etc, don't make you a better person or give you the green light to have a go at people submitting perfectly reasonable/innocent posts. As for taking a lesson from you, well I actually try to get along with other people...but thanks for the kind offer...

As both a member and a former Disco owner I too think you are out of order. Garry's simple question did no deserve that vitriolic reply.

You may think what you like

And I do not really care what you think.

I have explained my reason for the reply and it will stay as such.

These slanging matches can go on forever.

I may just keep on baiting you and anyone else who cares to enter the fray

G/day Lionel. As a Landy owner, IMHO in early discos, the 98mod 300tdi is probably the best one to chase up if wanting to go landrover, They where a very good unit.

Cheers Axle.

Hi Lionel,

There are lots of horror stories about Land Rovers, more often than not from those who have never owned one. I have been driving them since my early Army days in 1967, and have owned a number of them. My current one is a 99 V8 Disco 11. I can't think of a vehicle I would rather have. Yes there have been quality issues with Land Rover, but they started to get better under BMW ownership, and even better under Ford. The 300 was by all accounts the best diesel Land Rover engine.

You mentiuoned a 2.8. There is a 2.8 litre development of the 300 made (I think) in Brazil, and MD Engineering in the UK distributes the engine and Land Rover conversion kits world-wide. If the one you are looking at is really a 2.8, then I suspect that it is one of these conversions. It appears to be a good, reliable engine, without all the elcronics we seem to be plagued with now.

Buying a used Disco is a bit of a lottery, as they do not tolerate inadequate maintenance or too much abuse. Seriously, get it inspected by a competent and experienced Land Rover mechanic before buying, because they can be expensive if you buy a lemon. But get a good one and you may never want anything else.

My two cents worth.

Terry
