Hello to all, hey has anyone purchased the new "Hema GPS" with the topographic maps loaded into it?
Any thoughts on this unit? The write up it gets is pretty good but then again, it WAS written by Hema.
Cheers: Phil

Have a look at thread 60176. There's been a couple of others as
well, so you could try a search of the
forum.

I have to agree with the thread above. We used ours up at the cape in June. The oziexplorer and mapping was spot on.I would like to see it on a slightly bigger screen because of having to put reading glasses on while driving.Drove through
brisbane a week ago and it was at its limits of map at about ferny grove heading to samford

Hi Doug
I have a Hema Navigator and various Garmins including a 7200. Would I buy the Hema Navigator again? Probably not for the following reasons.
For city driving the Route 66 software is a long way behind the Garmin City Navigator software. Streets around Newecastle that have been there for over 20 years are not shown on Route 66.
Using it in OziExplorer mode is OK but the display is too small and my old eyes have trouble reading it as I drive. By contrast my Garmin 710 and 7200 are both far easier to read and do a better job for me. I use Shonky Maps on the Garmins when I run out of City Navigator coverage.
It is overpriced for what it gives you.
I have used Garmins for a long time and I still have my original GPS 12 which still works
well.
I never travel without paper maps and I can always cross reference these if necessary.
Just my view, I am sure others will not agree.

We have just returned fron central oz and found the mapping excellent. We just left it on Oziexplorer and found the detail on these maps excellent even in remote areas like
Cattlewater Pass.
Still working out how to get the best out of it. A decent manual would be handy.
Cheers
Kevin

Kevin, I agree a decent manual would certainly help. What they supply is hopeless.

Hi folks,
If you haven't already done so, a more detailed manual is available at hemanavigator.com.au/support/productmanuals.
Spelling errors aside, it gives better info than the "Getting Started" version. Some of the VMS staff need some customer relations training. I rang a couple of times before the manual was available on line only to receive the impression that I was techno illiterate (true to some extent but I can read a manual when provided) and definitely an inconvenience. After I promised to keep ringing as frequently as needed until a decent manual was available, the tone changed. Silly me, I was expected to know info not included in the getting started manual.
Otherwise I am extremely happy with it. My only concern is that none of the 4WD mode nav readouts give an ETA.
For what its worth,
Jon W

The lack of an ETA at waypoint or destination is just one of the many shortcomings.
To someone who has not owned a Garmin it might appear normal but after owning a Garmin it is a disappointment.
If I need to view OziExplorer enroute, I think I will stick to doing it on the Laptop with my Garmin providing the GPS input. This way there is no compromise.
